Have you ever faked being sick so you can take a day off work?

How did you spend the day instead?

I think I did...I really can't remember. I don't ever remember doing it to go anywhere or do something special.

I did a few times - many years ago I had a manager who was a stickler for rules even when it made no difference. He was the kind of guy who would deny a late request for a day off because he expected a certain amount of notice, even if there was hardly any work to be done. Most of the team figured that if we needed a single day off at short notice it was easier to just call off sick than deal with his "management".

A previous manager was far more accommodating - he had standard notice periods he wanted but unless there was a compelling reason why someone couldn't take a day off at short notice he'd let them do it. We had an informal agreement that if you took time off with less than the required notice you had to buy coffee for the team. It was a small team and most of us ended up buying a round of coffee a couple of times per year. I don't think any of us faked sickness to take a day off with him because he was easy to work with.

I once faked being sick so I would not have to go to school.
