What are some things you can do to stay safe when driving through a bad neighborhood or area? Sometimes my GPS doesn't know any better and I find myself suddenly in a place I'd rather not be. I've driven through some really BAD neighborhoods before but want to hear your advice on what you do. We can always learn more from each other.

Dont stop, roll up windows and lock doors. If followed go someplace public or a police station. If in a bad spot trust your gut and get out of there

Carry pepper spray always and a cell phone to use in case you need to contact police.

When I first got divorced back in 1990 I was so broke all I could afford was a studio apartment way on the third floor of an old Victorian style house that had been sectioned off into five apartments. It was in the bad part of town but being at the top of the house I had a great view of the neighborhood. I'll tell ya there was usually more going on to watch in the hood than there was on t.v. lol

What I do is drape one hand over the wheel, lean towards the center of the car, pour me some sizzurp, put on some 36 Mafia, turn up my bank of subs, and commence to throwing gang signs out the window...works like a charm every time. :)

Detroit is lot's of fun. I found out that city landmarks help a lot. If I got stuck in a neighborhood that was not good, I usually could twist my way out of it. The idea, though, was to twist quickly. Some routes that looked not to be the best actually turned out to be okay, and were bypasses around the busier routes, so that was somewhat safer. Detroit was strange in that one block of a street was okay, and the next block - get out! Then the next block you'd be fine again. Strange.
My fondest memory :)scared:) was going to a job training in Detroit with a colleague of mine who was African American. He got directions from Google maps that took us through some of the worst neighborhoods of Detroit. He remarked to me that "you might want to lean your seat back". Even he wasn't sure he'd be safe.
