I got my license on my 16th birthday.... as soon as I could in my state.
I took a course from a licensed school (as is required here). And this was supplemented by my parents in my car (my parents gave me mom's old car).

I was 17. My parents seemed to not want another teen driver in the family so ended up waiting. Back in the 70's, Driver's Ed was taught in the schools. You could take it during the school year or in the summer. I took it in the summer.
