I think one ought to go to church if one is able. Various things can hinder - sickness, need to care for children, sick relatives, injury, disability and so forth. So I say yes and other.

In general I would say we should go to church simply for fellowship, support and encouragement with other Christians. But I don't see it as a prerequisite to be pleasing to God.

I always think of the internet meme that says religion is a man sitting in church thinking about kayaking while spirituality is a man sitting in a kayak thinking about God. It's not unheard of for me to skip church on a Sunday morning and go for a long walk in the woods by myself. I'm not going to pretend to spend the whole time praying but there's a certain something about walking a long way, exerting myself pretty hard, and being totally alone without seeing another human being in the entire day that really helps me focus on God and ignore worldly distractions. Of course it helps that there's no cellphone signal there either :)

I don't like the way it's worded. It's not that we HAVE to go to church but that we GET to go to church! We go and are fed by God by His Word & Sacrament. It's a different mentality when you look at it through the lens of God serving us by giving us His Word to build/strengthen faith as opposed to, well, I have to go to church this Sunday or God won't like me.

There is an affinity with where you met Yeshua. If you met Him on your own in an one on one in private prayer, you are more free to congregate with whomever, where ever God calls you to go. If you met Him in a congregational setting, then you are more inclined to associate Him with that congregation.
