Ditch the Cloth Mask!

I'm shocked at how strongly people feel about their cloth masks and thinking it's protecting themselves or their loved ones. Have they not read the reports that cloth masks are only 10% effective? That's really nothing at all.

A judge blocked the mandate for masks on airlines and I'm reading about people being furious. Why don't those people read what the CDC recommends and get themselves N95 or KN95 masks to wear in order to protect themselves if they're so afraid?

My niece is a scientist who works in DC and last fall said don't even bother with the other masks. Get the N95 or KN95.

So if you're still clinging to your cloth mask, do some research if you don't want to believe this gal on the internet. That cloth mask is only working to restrict 10% of the particles...if that's a test then it's a big fat F.

10% at best, I have seen some studies that put it as low as 1-2% effective.

People were literally throwing them away during flights yesterday. It is going to be particularly interesting for kids that have not known differently. My son (4.5 yo) has never been in an airport where you don't have to wear a mask. He's been very good about it (when we are required to), it will be a great experience for him to fly this summer without wearing one.

I find it staggering the way people act as if a lack of mandate is the same as a prohibition. The fact you aren't obliged to put a sock on your head doesn't mean you can't if it makes you feel better. It just means other people get to make their own choice

That's their complaint. They think that the other people not wearing a mask is going to kill them.

Do you know that at the height of the pandemic that 1/3 of Democrats believed that if they caught covid they would die?

I believe it. A recent article in the New York Times (not exactly a right-wing outlet) indicated how the most liberal are the most afraid of the virus even though most of them are in the lowest risk groups. Whereas the split was once pretty much along left-right lines they reported that everyone from moderate liberals to moderate conservatives had a risk viewpoint that was at least broadly in line with reality, extreme conservatives were more likely to underestimate the risks to themselves while extreme liberals were very likely to significantly overestimate the risks.

Even in the early days the CDC reckoned that for the under-50s in generally good health the mortality rate was something like 0.02% and that was probably based on flawed numbers, given the vague definition of what counted as a "COVID death" and the undercounting of cases we know about because they said it was confined to the Pacific northwest even as people across the country contracted it.

Still, at least they got to flatten an economy and create aftershocks that will last for years.
