I'd say God has not commanded anyone to make a Christian nation anywhere so I doubt they were out to make one themselves. Jesus made it clear his kingdom is not of this world so why would he either directly or through anyone else to do so when he explicitly stated in scripture that it is not of this world.

They came to escape persecution and became persecutors themselves. The Indians saved them from starvation and they ended by hunting Indians for sport.

They came to form a COLONY of England, not a nation. England was (technically) a Christian nation already, although they were not followers of the specific state denomination of that country... and they sought (and were given) the freedom to believe and practice differently, in "non-conformity" with the Church of England.
