Paul says in 2 Corinthians 4:11-12 "For we who live are constantly being delivered over to death for Jesus sake, that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh. So death works in us, but life in you."

So, is this just about the persecution and trials that the apostles underwent during their ministry to try and tell people about Jesus or is there something more here?

I see a duel meaning here, one is the trials and persecutions that they went through and also the purifying of the saints through trials

Paul certainly painted a bleak picture sometimes of what was happening to himself. Yet he was in the center of God's will. Perhaps that should be a lesson that God's way is not always the easy way

Rom 8:13
For if ye live according to the flesh,
ye shall die:
but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body,
ye shall live.

Col_3:5
Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth;

Further, Paul preaches Christ Crucified in his own flesh for all Christians:

1Co 4:14-17
I write not these things to shame you, but as my beloved sons I warn you.
For though ye have ten thousand instructors in Christ,
yet have ye not many fathers:
for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel.
Wherefore I beseech you, be ye followers of me.
For this cause have I sent unto you Timotheus,
who is my beloved son, and faithful in the Lord,
who shall bring you into remembrance
of my ways which be in Christ,
as I teach every where in every church.

This way of life that embraces daily death is THE way of the Cross that Paul preaches, and through which he BIRTHS the faithful INTO Christ... Paul's Gospel is the Gospel of daily death IN Christ wherein he GIVES BIRTH to others IN Christ...
