Canada has dropped “Defender of the Faith” from the King’s title as part of a push to modernize the monarch’s role as head of state.

The measure to remove the traditional “defender” role from the title was carried out in Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s recent budget bill and it represents the first time since Confederation that there will be no explicit reference to the monarch’s Christian faith.

When a country decides it's no longer faithful to God, it's no wonder that they want to remove those types of titles as well. Canada was one of those places that arrested a pastor for wanting to have church during the covid shutdowns. The government isn't very friendly to believers.

Defender of the faith? That was even a thing?
During the Reformation, it surely was. And, incidentally, the emperor of the Eastern Roman Empire, and to some degree still today in some Orthodox countries, the head of state has much the same position, so it's not something that's peculiar to England. Of course, the sovereign has lots of titles, so this is just one of them.

In our time, this is not an issue for most people, but the king is still the declared head, the protector of the church. In case there's any question, he's not the 'head' in the sense of making doctrine or running everyday church policies, like the Pope of Rome does in that other denomination.

Oh yes, many UK coins include the inscription FID DEF, short for fidei defensor or "defender of the faith". Here's a coin from 2015

There was talk some time ago about Charles tweaking the title to "defender of faith", in recognition of the many people of many other faiths in the UK.
