A federal appeals court on Wednesday said the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) policy violates U.S. immigration law, dealing a blow to an Obama-era program that provides deportation protection and work permits to nearly 600,000 immigrant "Dreamers" who lack legal status.

I like DACA as it protects those that are already here. Offers them work permits and reduces the fear of deportation. Many of them have been through our school system and are now part of the workforce.

But there's a limit to the deferred action. It's been what, 8 years? At some point, Congress needs to actually do something instead of just letting temporary measures continue.

Your thoughts?

It seems to me that either a specific set of people need to be given legal immigration status, or they need to be deported. Either way it seems like this is the kind of kludge that encourages people to come and hope that if they can hide long enough they can kinda-sorta-stay, while not actually doing anything to address the underlying issue.

Sometimes programs like this seem to be the immigration equivalent of saying that if you steal something and don't get caught for long enough you get to legally keep it.

In this case, we have the mass pardoning of federal convicts (prosecuted for marijuana possession) AND a sudden renewal of the idea of legitimizing thousands of "Dreamers," both of which might be just in time for the 2022 elections.

I wonder what's next?

Bad Republicans, trying to subvert elections.

Yeh, we're getting a lot of carefully-chosen political phrases and words these days that need translation.

Republicans, as you said, are accused of opposing "voting rights" for wanting to keep unregistered and illegal people from voting. Then too, there's the term "reproductive rights" (or "freedom") used when advocating for abortion and/or infanticide.

And "equality," long a liberal watchword, has been erased in favor of "equity." Equality would mean treating everyone equally, but Equity simply means fairness, which the speaker can define any way he chooses.

For sure, MLKing's plea for equal treatment isn't what the loudest voices on the Left have as their goa. these days. Instead, it's a favored status for some chosen groups in society.

And so it goes.

Yep... if you can control the language you can control pretty much everything else.

Bad Republicans. It's only fair that everybody should vote. Even the people who aren't in the country legally. Funny how a legal immigrant can be deported for voting in a federal election but an illegal immigrant apparently can't. But blame the nasty Republicans.

It's curious that "reproductive rights" imply the right to destroy the result of the reproduction. But that's obviously the fault of the nasty Republicans too. Bad Republicans.

Up to a point equity makes more sense than equality. But as you say it can easily turn into offering preferential treatment to chosen groups based on nothing more than a claim that it's what is needed. I think that one is Bush's fault. Or Trump's fault. Everything else is these days.

Yep, that silly guy rabbiting on about content of character rather than color of skin. Didn't he know color of skin was crucial? You can't have equity without racism. Except it isn't racism if black people benefit from it. Bad Republicans.
