Confederate Flag debate

What is the deal with the stuff going around about the confederate flag? Do people still fly that thing?

I've seen a few people still fly it, but it's not meant to be of a racist nature relating to the KKK at least for some. I'm guessing it either looks cool to them or it's a southern thing.

You see it a lot here in NE Florida. I view it as a thinly veiled symbol of racial oppression. Some call it a symbol of southern pride, but as a southerner myself, I feel no pride in such a shameful chapter in U.S. history.

For me it represents states rights and the loss of them, has nothingh to do with race for me, that being said I would hesitate to fly it now knowing how so many view it

I think they SHOULD be able to fly it. As Bill said its about the RIGHT. And I have a friend who is from there and is proud of her home state and is very sad about it. I think they are abusing the "race" card. I was born in the South even and I see a lot of them so I don't see them as this "bad thing".

I spent a lot of time in the south and the vast majority of people use the flag as a southern pride thing and not as a racism statement.

With that said, it is totally up to the legislature in South Carolina as to whether it should be taken down from public property.

I've heard that from people in the south too, that it's about their pride. I know I still get called a yankee by some friends! LOL That has nothing to do with race!

I concur with you Army Wife. The young man who killed and injured the people he hated, has been filled with hate for a long time. I don't know if his dad or another relative had or has the influence of the notorious group of people who spewed and still spews hate. We can only pray that the Lord works on his heart before it's too late.

Since the publicity about the killer of the 9 black folks in church they have now associated it with racism; right or wrong that is how a lot of people view it. But I know that lots of people think of it as a Southern thing of pride. I don't care if people fly it or not really.

Well. my 2 pennies, I thought I had already posted, but reading back through, I did not see it. It is fine if people want to fly it on their private property. But the Confederacy was defeated in the Civil War, and I do not know of any country that flies the flag of a defeated foe. On state houses and public buildings the Confederate flag should not be flown imho. And it says to a lot of citizens and brothers and sisters in Christ that you wish the days of the Confederacy were still here. It symbolizes for many that they are still hated and that they should still be in slavery. As Christians we should demonstrate that we left the hatred and embraced the love of Jesus. Really he Bible says we should seek the good of others. If that flag causes someone to stumble, then it should not be flown. That is the Christian thing to do. How can you say you love your brother in Christ when you fly a symbol that says you wish he was a slave, or that he is not even all the way human. I had better stop here.

The rebel flag was a battle flag, not the national flag of the CSA nation. So it has nothing to do with the politics of the CSA aristocrats who had slaves. It was the flag the common soldiers fought under, most of whom did not own slaves and did not fight for slavery.

States rights was the real issue, states have an absolute right to leave the union although you wouldnt know it sionce the civil war
