Church traditions

Does the church you go to have any specific traditions that you do annually around Christmas or New Years?
I know some churches do "the hanging of the greens" where the sanctuary is decorated by church members for Christmas. Some also may have a Cantata or a children's programs/music

I am sure due to covid a lot of those traditions will change somewhat. I think the church I go to is still going to do a christmas eve service

Setting up the Christmas tree in the sanctuary, the Candle light Christmas Eve service and the midweek Advent services are the only ones I'm aware of. The Candle Light service this year is limited to people who sign up before hand. The service became two services due to spacing requirements from this Covid- 19 business.

In California, churches are not allowed to worship indoors.... and outdoors must be spaced apart, wear masks and not to sing. Mind you, strip clubs can meet indoors but not churches. Costco can be open indoors but not churches. It's okay for anyone to sing anywhere just not believers at a worship service.

Because weather can be cold (even in Southern California - it got down to 39 last night).... and because it gets dark at night in California... and because it can be a bit windy.... our church regarded an outdoor candlelight service on the parking lot to just not be doable. Some churches ARE having DAYTIME services (no candles) but we decided not to do that. We'll be streaming a service that a FEW (must be less than 10) are conducting inside the church.... people worshiping apart an online. Sucks.

yes, that does suck. My church is doing a service inside but I probably won't attend and watch it online. I haven't been in person in about a month. We have more hospitalizations in NC than we have had since this started. In April it was about a thousand and now it is over 3,000 hospitalizations in the state

Traditions do change. What is called sacred tradition today was once new and innovative and perhaps even resisted.

During Advent, we light one candle each week, with a family doing the readings. Lessons and carols the week before Christmas. A nice midnight service.

In NJ we can have 150 people, so there’s an in person service with video for the rest.
