I used to have all my Christmas shopping completed by the beginning of December but as people grow older (especially nieces and nephews), no one knows what they want anymore so they wait to tell me...which means waiting to shop. This year we're really trying to convince everyone to do online shopping or gift cards so they don't have to be exposed to too many people.

I have been working on crafts for Christmas gifts for a few months now! I'm almost done with that :)

Usually around the third week of December. My wife and I have found over the years that we prefer to avoid exchanging gifts with all and sundry, so typically exchange gifts with each other and that's about it. We found with several others we used to routinely exchange gifts that it turned into more of a chore than a delight, with us trying to find something suitable for them and them trying to find something suitable for us, all without breaking budgets or creating the kind of embarrassment when it's very obvious one side spent a lot more than the other side did. And that's before even considering the way so many people already have a house full and really don't need any more stuff, so buying them another doodad to take up space isn't necessarily even something they will appreciate.

Most years I spend much of November and December convincing my wife I'm not going to bother with Christmas. I'm usually pretty good at being able to sneak things into the house. She's tried to surprise me a few times but she's very bad at keeping secrets - it's not unheard of for me to know she's trying to hide something just by the look on her face.

I haven't started my Christmas shopping yet - I usually plan a trip to a supermarket at the beginning of December. It's too early to start thinking about the festive season, even more, to begin playing music or start buying presents.

She doesn't buy her own Christmas present, does she? If you've trained her to do that I need to take some tips from you :)

Unfortunately, no. THAT remains my thing.... and a hard thing it is. I'm TEMPTED to get her a BBQ or some awesome tool or even the latest in TV's but.....

What WORKS (but only works) is the gift of a romantic night together or maybe a weekend vacation to some B&B... if it's very romantic and I arrange everything (including child care) but in reality, we do this ANYWAY (now and then) and of course this is a gift for ME, too.... so...... it works but I try to do better, if I can.

She's not that into stuff.... some nice dress or neckless or whatever.... just not a big deal. And she'd prefer to buy such herself. Now, IF we are in a store ... and she HAPPENS to really notice something.... maybe somethiing too expensive to just get (she's a "but it's not on sale" person)... ah, THAT can be a golden opportunity but it's not common. And that's best as a "no occasion" gift.

Trying to think of something surprising..... something NOT done anyway..... something fun......something for HER....

How about you?

I buy for my wife and leave the rest to her. Honestly, I avoid exchanging gifts to the extent I can get away with it - there's so much scope for embarrassment if it's clear one party spent significantly more than the other and most people already have a house full of doodads (i.e. junk) anyway and don't need me spending $20 on another piece of junk to sit in a drawer until they can throw it out or regift it with a clear conscience.

Buying for her is tricky simply because we've already got a house full of stuff and we're not really into acquiring more junk. It's not as if it's even easy to find a good gift based on things she wants because that can change. One year I bought her an MP3 player (back in the days you didn't get a free one with every box of cornflakes) and she loved it. Another year she wanted a particular musical instrument, I managed to find one at a sensible price and now it acts as a shelf to store surplus dust.
