What is Christian ethics?

Christian ethics is the God-ordained moral framework that guides how believers live, think, and act according to the truth revealed in Scripture. It’s not a set of arbitrary rules or cultural preferences—it’s the holy standard of righteousness rooted in the character of God and the person of Jesus Christ.

Christian ethics demands obedience to God’s commands, a heart transformed by grace, and a life lived in imitation of Christ’s humility, love, and holiness. It confronts sin without compromise, calls for justice and mercy, and shapes every area of life—from how we treat others, to how we handle money, to how we face suffering and temptation.

Christian ethics flows from this twofold command: love for God and love for neighbor, empowered by the Holy Spirit. It stands as a holy witness in a fallen world, calling believers to be salt and light, holding fast to truth, and living lives worthy of the Gospel.

It’s not about perfection—it’s about faithful pursuit of God’s holiness in daily decisions, empowered by grace, shaped by Scripture, and lived out in community.

Christian ethics is the battle line where faith meets action. It’s the heartbeat of discipleship, the call to bear witness, and the measure of true freedom in Christ.

Christian ethics are a combination of 3 normative ethical theories: virtue ethics, Christian deontology, and Natural Law

I think that was changed in the new Testament. Christian Ethics is simply Christian Ethics. With the advent of Jesus coming to earth as a man and dying and resurrecting, we have been released from the law, so deontology is struck off the list real fast.

There's 3 types of Biblical law. Moral law, Ceremonial law, and Civil law, which is Judicial law. And we have been released from the Ceremonial law, but not the moral law and there's where Ethics come in. Do not do anyone wrong. And we are still under Civil law also. If you don't want to keep out of Civil court...Tie your dog up at night so He don't get into the Neighbors Chicken coop! There are consequences to breaking laws, and rightly so.

Deontology is rule-based ethics. And, when I asked Jesus about soteriology, about whether antinomianism or "saved by faith which sanctifies" or legalism is most proper, he said "just legalism."
