I try to check my email at least a couple times a day. If I'm expecting something, then I'll probably check it more.

My phone automatically checks something like every 30 minutes. If it beeps to say I have an email I look at it when I have a minute. Most of the email I get is junk.
When I'm using my computer that checks every 15 minutes. A window in the corner of the screen gives me an overview of what's coming in, so if it's anything important I can deal with it right away.
