You can't make this stuff up!

"CBS Mornings" pushed a recent study connecting climate change and hotter temperatures with childhood obesity rates in a ridiculed segment on Thursday.

Co-host Nate Burleson introduced the study published in the journal "Temperature" that argued "climate change, specifically warmer temperatures is making our children more inactive and more obese."

I suspect that the majority of cases, obesity is caused by poor eating. Not all cases certainly, but most.

Poor eating and a lack of exercise, largely caused by endless fearmongering and uncertainty about whether letting kids be kids counts as child abandonment.

When I was a kid (I'm talking age 9-10 perhaps) I was expected to walk to school (about a mile away) accompanied only by other kids. Recently a friend of mine had a fight with his ex-wife because she didn't think it was safe for their 12-year-old daughter to walk the quarter mile from his house to the bus stop. The road she would have walked was quieter than the roads I walked, and she has a cellphone.

When some people seem to think that letting your kids play outside and - horror - walk half a mile to the park so they can play, is abandoning your children it's easy to see why people don't want to risk CPS nosing around causing problems. Easier to just plonk the kids in front of a games console and wonder why they are obese.

I remember going to visit a friend to play. His house was about a mile from my house. His next door neighbor was an old man with several acres of land that he didn't use so he used to let us play in it. We'd just take off into what seemed to us to be an endless adventure ground with pretty much no rules except that we weren't to damage fences and we had to be back in time for tea. So we'd walk, run, climb, whatever. I wonder how many kids these days get the chance to do that.

But hey, blame climate change. Everything else is because climate change, or covid.

We just had lockdowns for a long time where kids were forbidden to go outside and play, playgrounds were taped off and the cops were called if parents tried to take their kids there, etc... Blaming this on Climate Change when it's a manmade issue is nonsense.

Hence what we really need is a climate change - a change to the political climate. Kick Nanny State out of our lives once and for all.

Our family lived in Kansas for a few years when I was growing up. I distinctly recall walking with my mom to a 7-11 for a slurpee - about an hour round-trip. It was over 100 Farenheit. I was always out walking or riding bikes with my friends.
The rental suite where I live, the landlords are upstairs and have two teenage kids. The kids bikes haven't MOVED so far this summer.
Global warming... -__-

We were outside all the time too! My mom would literally kick us out. Those memes about kids not coming home until the street lights came on is absolutely true!

We were really active, playing chase, doing acrobats, climbing trees, rollerskating, riding bikes, riding skateboards, all kinds of things. I was an overweight kid and did the same things everyone else did and ate less than my skinny sister, but I had a bad thyroid :(

That's absolutely true. But what is it that has kept our children inside the house in recent years, unlike the situation that prevailed until recently?

Many of the same people who want to assign the blame to "Global Warming" are the same people who allowed crime to escalate to the point that too many parents are rightly afraid to let their children play in the neighborhood lest they be assaulted, molested, kidnapped, or have their bikes stolen by criminals unafraid of any serious consequences even if they're caught doing it.

Another problem, in some areas at least, is the relentless focus on getting motor vehicles through places as fast as possible.

Certainly there need to be routes where traffic can get from A to B as easily as is sensibly possible. But when those routes go through residential areas and yet there is no attempt made to slow traffic it's easy to see why the belief grows that it's not safe for kids, particularly smaller kids, to play outside. You end up with neighborhoods cut in half by one or two fast roads and if kids from one side of the road want to play with kids the other side of the road it's just too bad.

Then by the time the kids are old enough to be trusted not to run into the road chasing an errant ball they are used to being sat in front of a games console all afternoon.
