Should car tires be replaced after five years, or can they go longer if they are still in good condition?

It depends on how much tread they have on them. If they are looking bald, you may need to replace them. If you are unsure, when you get your oil changed, ask the mechanic how your tires look.

Tires do age. So, it's not JUST a matter of wear and tread but also how old they are. The "rule" I've heard is 6 years. MOST people replace their tires before that but not always (especially since some modern tires are good for 80-100K miles).... and sometimes they forget the spare (if they have a traditional tire for that).

The tires are basically dangerous after about five or six years, even if the tread wear doesn't yet indicate that it's time for new tires.

I'm not sure it's useful to act as if a single age is a universal limit regardless of conditions.

I go by the tread on mine, and if they are looking in a poor state I'd replace them even if the tread is OK. I usually replace them before the tread is at the point they are illegal, simply because I'd rather know I've got good grip in the wet and snow.

I am not a mechanic. Given I had a vehicle, I would prefer it to be vehicle that was easy to work on, and understand, and not a computer. I used to have a 1996 F-150 with original body style. It looked like a F-150 from the 1980's.

I am not an expert on vehicles. Given my tires had tread on them, I would differ to knowledgeable authority, that is, someone who was working on them at the time.

Also....I probably am cognizant enough to understand if someone was lying to me.
