We can be void of any ACTS of sin for a time.... but that doesn't mean we've ceased to be sinful.

I very rarely get colds (can't remember the last one) but lets say I have one. Now, perhaps I take a handful of powerful pills - and thus I'm not (AT THIS SECOND) coughing or sneezing, and I don't have a runny nose or sore throat. Do I have a cold? Yup. Just no symptoms at this moment.

What is the Law?

The Law is the will of God - flowing from His absolute perfection and justice. It is, in essence, that we be as He is - not in terms of essence but character.

Psalm 51:5 "I was sinful at birth"

Genesis 8:21, "Every inclination of man's heart is evil from childhood."

Romans 5:12, "Sin entered the world through one man's sin, and death through sin, and therefore death came to all men for all have sinned."

Romans 3:12, "There is no one who does good, not even one."

Mark 10:18, "There is none who is good but God exclusively."

First John 1:8, "If we claim we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us."

What does the Law mandate?

Essentially, that our character be identical to His.

Matthew 5:48, "You must be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect."

1 Peter 1:16, "You must be holy even as God in heaven is holy."

John 15:12, "Love all people just as I (Jesus) first loved you."

Ephesians 4:32, "forgiving one another, just as God in Christ first forgave you."

First John 2:6, "Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did."

Philippians 2:5, "You must have the same attitude that Christ did."

Historically, Christians have spoken of ORIGINAL and ACTUALIZED sin.....

Original: The inclination, the propensity, that DISEASE that means we are self-centered, egotistical, self-serving, rebellious. It's what is in our hearts that LEADS to sins, it is the root of sin. When a man shoots his boss, the "problem" didn't start with the bullet entering the guys' chest, it began with something deep in the heart of the shooter - which LEAD to the chain of things that ultimately meant his pointed his gun and pulled the trigger. If I have a cold, I may sneeze. The sneeze is not the disease, it flows from the disease (which I may have even if I'm not sneezing at that microsecond; even if I take enough pills to never sneeze I still have a cold).

Actualized: These are the symptoms. They may be our thoughts or our words or our deeds. They may be known (observed) or not (even the sinner may not be aware of them). They may be thoughts or words of deeds we SHOULD have had but didn't (being imperfect)... they may be thoughts or words or deeds we should NOT have had but did (being sinful).

There are different kinds of Law in the OT

Moral Law: Governs behaviors and our relationships to God, each other and our environment. This still applies.

Ceremonial Law: Governs all the ceremonial aspects of the Old Covenant such as the building of the Ark, clothes priests are to wear, not eating certain foods, observing certain Old Covenant festivals, etc. This does not apply.

Civil Law: Governs the state affairs of the ancient kingdom of the Jews, the divine mandates to the kings vis-a-vis political and international relations. This ceased when Israel fell in 722 BC and Judea fell in 587 BC.

"Sin" = "to miss the mark, to fall short of the mark." If you are "hitting the mark" perfectly, absolutely, 24/7 in your being, nature, thoughts, words and deeds..... in what you do and do not think/say/do/not do..... ALWAYS as perfect as God..... ALWAYS as holy as God.... ALWAYS as loving as Christ on the Cross..... ALWAYS having the same attitude, heart and life as Jesus..... ALWAYS fulfilling perfectly the 612 commandments of the OT and also all of the NT..... then you are obedient and have no sin. But the Bible says, "NO ONE is righteous, no, not even one." The Bible says, "if any claims to be without sin, he is a liar and he deceives only himself."

Thank you.

Yes we're made holy. Paul sent letters to the saints. If you sinned you confess it and it's gone 1 John 1:9 and your conscience is cleansed by His blood. If you know who you are in Christ and that your old man died with Him and that you're seated with Him in the heavenlies you don't expect yourself to do the same thing over and over. 1 John 2

My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.

Yes but only for a second or so as I believe the mind is always active

thoughts are not sin unless they are encouraged and then acted upon.. the decision to do a sin begins in the mind
we dont follow the carnal nature of the mind ..we make a choice to obey the holy Spirit and so do not ened up doing the carnal action of a sin

this is where so many people get muddled ,thinking that every random thought which pops into their head which they had no intent to think ,is sin . it is not. it is simply something to be rejected .unless of course you want to sin ..then you entertain that thought ,feed it and grow it into an action . this cant take hours or mere seconds .but we have been set free from captivity so that we can now make that decision. cant blame any one else what so ever .

yup .. "IF" not repeatedly continues to ." IF" denotes a one of error . and upon making that error we feel the conviction of the holy Spirit and then we know it was wrong .. so we repent and admit that to the lord and he forgives us ..UTTERLY ,TOTALLY FULLY we then learn from that and go on and DON'T DO THAT MISTAKE AGAIN .. because we learned it was wrong .

we absolutely DO NOT go on doing the same error over and over and over again .. as that would display that we have learned nothing and have NOT REPENTED and continuing to do it shows we do not YET know GOD .. for those born of GOD cannot continue in the practice of sin.. it is written - it is so .

oh the JOY of having a clear conscience with GOD it is so very very joyous .if you dont have one .. get one .he died and rose again to make it possible :D

SO very many Scriptures come to mind. For example Matthew 5:28 and First John 3:15 (just off the top of my head).....

But it's more simple than that: We are to love the Lord our God with ALL our hearts and all our soul and all our mind. None of those are actions. And if we don't do so - perfectly, absolutely, 100%, 24/7 - then we are missing the mark (the definition of sin) - even though nothing was DONE.

using the terminology of 'sinless' is always going to upset the sinners (those that PRACTICE SIN as an ongoing part of their life .
it would have been better if you worded it ... can you go a whole day without committing a sin you know to be a sin.. then the answer is an emphatic YES .

the Lord JESUS did it and he was fully man in EVERY WAY tempted and tested as we are in EVERY WAY and yet he did not sin .

as for being without sin.. noi one when they first come to god comes without sin.. if they come not admitting when they came , that they have sin then they come before him as liars and so are sinning in their very denial of sin .

but once they have repented of their sin and received forgiveness ..is it not written that he cleanses them of ALL UNRIGHTEOUSNESS .. not some but ALL !
then at that moment let GOD BE TRUE .. they stand sinless before him and NONE can accuse them any more . for when the highest authority in existence has declared them pardoned then no charge can be bought against them what so ever and anyone who attempts to bring a charge against them opposes the word of Lord God the most high one true living GOD .
but - if that person then goes and does again the very thing they are forgiven of .. knowing it is sin.. then they are in rebellion and are adding sin to sin and become again guilty of their own actions before God .

Agreed. Although the question isn't about Jesus, it's about you.

Yes, JESUS was sinless. The Bible specifically says so. Now, name just 10 living Christians who are sinless. Who are perfect just as and to the same extent that God is perfect.... who are holy just as and to the same extent that God is.... who are loving just as and to the same extent that God is.... who have the same attitude and life that Christ lived..... who are 100% righteous and NEVER fall short, NEVER miss the mark, NEVER need forgiveness or mercy or salvation or justification or Christ or the Gospel because they never have any sin. Just 10. Start with yourself if you like, just ask your wife to post that she testifies to your absolute, divine perfection, holiness, righteousness and love - NEVER, ever, is there ANY need to forgive you of anything.

they are ALL made known by their outworked actions .. just like LOVE .. remember LOVE .. if you think or say to a person be clothed and fed ,, then you have thought and said well. but you have NOT LOVED THEM until you give them some clothes and feed them some food .. what is in you is proven by the action you do .
it is the same with sin.. if sin is in you then the proof it is in you is in the action you do .. like , going and looking at some porn because you lust after sexual immorality .

thus whether we love the lord with all our hearts mind and strength is proven by what we choose to think and do .. if we are born again of the Spirit of god then we already have a new heart and have nature of christ and we already love him as christ loved him for it is christ who lives within us (if we are indeed born again ) we then change our minds (the constant renewing of the mind )and obey the nature of christ within us by the holy Spirit and it is all made evident by the resulting ACTION that comes forth .

so if you continue to do the same sin..who is it you are following .. not the lord JESUS that is for SURE .
the essence of the word repent is to 'think again' mto change your mind .. it is why we are told to always be renewing the mind to agree with the Holy Spirit and the word of GOD .

Irrelevant. Just a diversion.

Matthew 5:28, "But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart." ALREADY. IN HIS HEART. It says nothing about ANY "act" ever happening.... or that an "act" is needed for it to be sinful. It's ALREADY adultery.

First John 3:15, "Anyone who hates a brother or sister is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life residing in him." IS.... a murderer. IN HIS HEART. Nothing about any "act" of anything to anyone.

And those were just two of the Scriptures that immediately popped into my head. You theology of sin is very, very unbiblical. You attempt to strip sin of any relevance, make it as tiny as you can - perhaps to escape it. This "you gotta ACT on it" is just another way you keep doing this. Sin is in our BEING, our HEARTS, deep INSIDE. If anyone claims to be without sin, he is a liar and he deceives only himself. NO ONE is righteous, no, not even one. Sure - when I'm sleeping, I MAY (may!) not COMMIT any outward ACT of disobedience, but that's irrevelant to the issue of whether I'm sinful. It just means I'm SLEEPING, lol. I'm the same ME..... Chief of sinners (like SAINT Paul). I'm NOT perfect as God, holy as God, loving as God, always hitting the mark and NEVER missing it.

.

do you not know the scriptures ,, i have been brought into union with christ
i have been born again of the holy Spirit
it is no longer i that live but christ that lives in me
all he has accomplished and inherited .. i have been made a co inherited with him
i am a joint heir with him .
he became sin that i might be made the righteousness of god in christ .

the righteousness of god does not go and willfully sin a sin known to be sin.

repent , be baptised into the lord jesus ..die with him into his death that you may rise a new creation in him and recive the holy ghost . get buried with him into his death .and end the old nature's rule in your life by the power of his resurrection..

dont be childish josiah .. the lord jesus himself said that love without deeds is not love .i hardly call what he said irrelevant. and the lord Jesus said this of all men .. before they are born again it is WHY they MUST BE BORN AGAIN

So is Christ the sinner, or you?

Or are you sinless, perfect as God, holy as God, loving as God, NEVER missing the mark, NEVER falling short, NEVER needing forgiveness or mercy or salvation or Christ or the Savior because you have no sin? Let's have your wife chime in, maybe she can tell us if you are the one who makes Scripture wrong when it says "If anyone claims to be without sin, he is a lair and he deceives only himself."

It's SCRIPTURE that notes you are wrong.

Just TWO examples, off the top of my head....

Now, you may find that "childish" but it is true.

How on earth can you sin if you are praying for people in Spirit and truth or when you're worshipping Him? It's impossible.
I had some bad thoughts today because of all those horrible discussions I had with exchristians over the last years. I confessed it as sin and asked that He would bring me back to when it was simple. God loves everyone. He wants everyone saved. My oikos gets saved. God said it, He gave me a dream once that all my collegues and old collegues got saved and the streets were packed with people before the church building to come in, and this faith is back. I don't worry anymore about them. I was full of excuses. I can't pray. I am alone. I can never pray with others. I feel lonely. I need to post nonsense. Look at the amount of I's. Then I thought: well I'm not alone today. I'm out with all my friends, so the whole day I prayed for them during the trip. You can't sin when you pray.

I think you're both right. If the devil shoots an arrow it's not even your own thought. If you immediately resist it, it's not sin.

I think you're both right. If the devil shoots an arrow it's not even your own thought. If you immediately resist it, it's not sin.

except that the lord jesus was simply showing that the actions we do begin in the heart . but NOW..in christ (if we are indeed in christ ) we are no longer enslaves to the compulsions of the flesh but free to chose to not do them .:D
did not christ come to destroy the works of the devil.. not the thoughts of the devil .. interesting ain't it :D

the lord Jeuss was saying that pretending to do good actions when the desire to do them is ruling your heart is just hypocrisy and you will sooner or later do what is in your heart to do .you can never do what is not in your heart to do ... if your heart is full of evil .. evil will come forth as word and deed .. if your heart is ful of god , good wil come forth in every word and deed ..if your heart is mixed then it is impure and you need to repent and stop being mixed and luke warm .
just like james writes when he says a man can only be tempted by the lust that is already in his heart ... he is able to be tempted only by that which he secretly already desires to do .
BUT NOW .. the lord JESUS has made us a new creation and given us a new heart with his own nature and spirit .. his nature and spirit in us NEVER desires to sin .
so when we use the freedom and authority he has given us (being that all authority has been given to him and we are made joint heirs together with Christ )and put to death the old nature that we might live according to the new nature of christ ..then it is impossible for us to sin while doing that .

the Op asks can you be sinless ( though i think he means can you not commit sin ) for 1 second . well i ask ,can you live more then 1 second at a time ? NO !
so if each and every moment of your life, you choose to live in obedience to the Holy Spirit within you ( if you have been baptised in the holy Spirit and so have him in your heart ) you cannot not in that one moment that you live .. sin .
we are not called to live some moments in christ and other moments OUT of christ . we are comanded to ABIDE in him always .

Top Bottom
