Black hole born without stellar parent, evidence suggests

Scientists have known for some time now that certain stars can give rise to black holes upon their "death." Our sun is far too small to ultimately result in a black hole, and its fate is said to be that of a white dwarf.

However, astronomers have found remote galaxies that might harbor a type of black hole that arises directly from a massive cloud of gas rather than forming after the death of a star. This could lead to new insights into how the super-massive black holes found at the center of many galaxies (including our own) with a mass billions of times larger than our sun, have formed.
