Big concerts or little venues?

Which is your preference? Big concerts with big name celebrities? Or smaller venues with more of the local bands/singers?

I really have no interest in paying silly prices just to get into a venue, only to then find I have to pay exorbitant prices to park and be told I can't take anything bigger than my cellphone into the venue, and then have my wallet further emptied by outrageous prices once inside.

Give me a small venue and a local band any day.

Small venues are perfect for me. There are amazing artists that tour - relatively well known in certain 'niche' circles. As an example, there have been many tours of various members of the prog band 'King Crimson' who record and tour together in different configurations (if that makes sense). I'm going this moth to see one of them, and about six months ago saw some former members of KC along with Steve Vai and Danny Carrey (Tool). It was a perfect small venue - great music for about $50

I've only been to one big concert, a Chris Tomlin concert and I loved it. I think I'd prefer smaller venues because they're not so confusing and whatever. But all of the small venue concerts I've been to have been local(ish) musicians and the sound mixing is terrible, even if the musicians are good. As a musician, it really is difficult for me to enjoy the music at small venues when the mixing isn't done well.

I came within a hair's breadth of going to Woodstock 69. I was 7 years old and I remember my parents talking about it. They would have to take all 4 of the kids, and they kind of wanted too, but I was the youngest, and they were not sure if it would be acceptable for one as young me to be there. They figured probably not, so everybody stayed home.

It would have been cool to be there.

Nowadays, what's a celebrity? Someone who plays or sings music? Oh, Musicians. Lots of Musicians have good songs. I am not a "fan" in the least of any of them. (Fan is short for Fanatic). I may like their music but I wont pay too much to go see someone perform. I went to a few concerts when I was young. I paid $7 to see the Doobie Brothers! I saw Aerosmith too and their ticket was $15 dollars! (high priced for those days!)

You see these Christian bands traveling around from venue to venue. A lot of times they'll play in a local church when they stay over in a town. Of course, it's at a reduced price and short notice. Those last second local shows are really neat if you ever get a chance.

I wanted to list Joni Mitchel's Woodstock story in comparison to yours, but it's not uplifting Christian history. The words to the song itself are tthe biggest reason.

The story in a nutshell is this: she was recommended not to go to the festival because she was performing on the Dick Cavit show the next day and nation wide television coverage would be better for her career.

My friend wanted to see Jethro Tull so bad. Everytime they came locally it was always at least $100 for horrible seats. God forbid hurricane Katrina hit and ruined Jethro Tull's New Orleans concert schedule. Like alot of bands do, they scheduled a benefit concert in Shreveport LA.

My friend's son secretly gets tickets ($5 benefit) and brings his dad to see Jethro Tull.

The draw of the smaller venues these days is the chance to see real musicians. There are so many guitar virtuoso's who play well and you can tell are excellent at their craft, but it's almost like an assembly line. I can't tell the difference between them.
But then there are those 'niche' bands I mentioned who are more interested in the craft of the music than pride in their abilities

Had a chance to see them many years ago. It was basically the "Ian Anderson Band" at that point (but touring as Jethro Tull) but still a great show. It was before Ian really started to lose his voice, so even more special

Got a chance to see Matthew West at a local church aboout a year ago. Great show. His guitarist needed to tone it down a bit, though

I saw Kings X play live in a tiny little venue I didn't even know existed until a friend invited me to join him for the gig. The cost per ticket was the equivalent of maybe $15-20 per person, cheap enough that my wife came along even though she wasn't sure what she'd make of it.

It was a brilliant venua and a great concert. For much of it I was at the front, close enough that I could have reached out and touched the band when they were near the front of the stage.

Many years previously I saw Lisa Dominique play in an even smaller venue. I forget how much that cost, it was 30-odd years ago now. Again, a tiny venue where my friend and I were right at the front as she strutted back and forth across the stage slapping the hands of people in the front row.
