Could be. However, it's quite obvious that his contracting Covid in recent days does not explain the diminished mental and physical condition of the man that we all have been witnessing for a while now.

Not at all, but it does give him a convenient out. Perhaps the party faithful will accept the line that he's "been under the weather for some time now" as an explanation for why he's been the way he has, and somehow it will all be spun as if everything about the process is as perfect as it could possibly have been.

Well, I can imagine him taking that opportunity, but it would seem like something that wouldn't persuade very many people.

Maybe it's the case, though, that he has to say something other than that he was talked out of doing what he was so insistent that he would do.
