For one thing, the church tries to be a 'good neighbor' to all the residents on the nearby streets, regardless of those folks' own religious beliefs or affiliations.
To that end, the church invites the neighbors to attend the church's non-religious (and non-fundraising) celebrations like the barbeques and so on. The same goes for Vacation Bible School to which all the kids living nearby are welcome, etc.
By contrast, I know that there are churches which are close to residences but take something of a "you go your way and we'll go our way" approach to the neighborhood or, worse, pay no mind to inconveniencing the neighbors when, for example, the church decides to park its school busses right next to the property line.
