Banning smart phones.

Do you think that smart phones ought to be banned because texting and playing games like pokemon while driving leads to many deaths on the roads and no amount of warnings and laws stops people texting while driving.

Maybe a "stupid phone" could be used as a substitute and a second device for apps like pokemon could be created. The second device could be engineered so that it turned off when inside a car. The stupid phone could be bluetooth tethered in the car and only work in hands-free mode. Maybe something like that would save lives.

Yes, but they don't.

I suppose a smart phone could be programmed to operate only hands free while in a car and turn off games and other distractions so that only phone calls could be made while driving.

I think there are apps that won't work as the user drives a vehicle. I can't remember which ones do that though. I believe there are jamming devices too to prevent cell phones from working but I don't think it can be specific to a driver unless technology has improved since I last heard about this?

Sadly you can't teach stupid to behave ..everyone knows its wrong and yet they still do it with the hope it wont happen to me until it does and sadly not always the idiot that caused it in the first place gets hurt or dead... Its like everyone knows its the law to wear a seat belt but people still don't and I think fining them isn't enough just ban them from driving not that even that stops those that think they are above the law...

Right. You cant teach them, thats why I suggested the banning, but right again, that wont work either, if they think they're above the law.

There are all sorts of levels of stupidity aren't there? People who walk into poles while texting or while playing a PHONE-GAME are profoundly stupid in one way but may be smart in all sorts of other ways. People who text while driving are profoundly stupid and wicked too since their stupidity is exactly the sort of stupidity that costs other people's lives. They know it is stupid to text while driving but they do it anyway. It's very disturbing to be out on the road and wonder if some other driver is texting and will soon crash into you.

Exactly. And, my Dad is 89, and younger ppl often say, 'Get those old fogies off the road', but he has a nearly flawless record for almost his entire life, yet he's the one who has to be extra careful, bc if he even gets in a minor accident, a slight fender bender, no matter who's fault it is (and it would probably be the fault of some idiot drinking or smoking dope and driving, and texting, like the next door 'neighbors' do constantly) but he'd likely be the one to lose his license simply bc of his age. You're right, it IS nerve-wracking, trying to drive knowing the next future drug addict alcoholic texting idiot is being handed a drivers license today. But Im trying to learn how to pray more and complain less. Lord, help us all!

Yes, that's one kind of stupid - it's a bad kind but I was thinking of a good kind, the kind where a phone makes phone calls and allows texting but does not anticipate text nor play games nor act as a media player and so forth, it would just be a phone like a phone ought to be!

I saw that they made such apps. If you drive more than 10 km/h the phone shuts off. If you ignore it it sends an email to your boss.
They should combine it with insurance. No app or ignore it -> no money from the insurance company.
