Why do you think some people make bad decisions over and over and never learn from them?

Do you know someone like this?

God controls every decision everyone ever made or will make. He does this by providing you with the reason you base your decision on. That's why we pray "lead us not into temptation".

Sometimes they don't see that there is a trend in their decision making, like women choosing the same type of man who mistreats her.

Many years ago I knew a guy who relentlessly fell back on "I can't afford it" whenever I tried to suggest ways he might improve his life, learn new skills etc. Which was all well and good, except that "I can't afford it" never applied when it came to buying beer or eating out. If my wife and I went out for dinner with him his bill was invariably more than ours combined - he'd always choose the more expensive dishes and the more expensive drinks.

I haven't seen him for a couple of years now so can't say if he ever sorted himself out. I tried to help him budget more but he seemed disinterested.

People are motivated by a lot of things like trying to fill a need they might not know they have, living out a dynamic from early childhood, etc. Tango's friend might have a sense of learned helplessness, borne out of codependent relationships or maybe a sense of entitlement due to lack of parental boundaries, or he might simply value life's pleasures over sound financial management. I believe that our early childhood sets us up for a lot of automatic behaviours as an adult, and because they are automatic/outside our awareness, we are practically helpless to do much about it. I have to say, though, that once you become aware of them, you can then make a more conscious decision of whether to continue the decisions or change how decisions are made.

I have made some pretty sketchy decisions for a few reasons: attachment style/daddy issues, wanting to get noticed/accepted, replaying family dynamics, not having boundaries, stubbornness (or determination, depending on your philosophical bent) and other reasons. The Lord was with me, though, even in the consequences of those poor decisions, and he kept me safe a lot of times I didn't deserve it. He is a merciful God!

Yes

And sin. And self-centeredness. And inmaturity. And irresponsibility. And sometimes we just never learn.

God determines the end from the beginning. So every decision a person makes is part of His plan for them in how they fit the final destiny.

Some people don't think deep down that they deserve to be happy. Other people enjoy the chaos they create.

... and some people either don't think through consequences or don't think benefits are worth the sacrifice.

A guy I worked with years ago said that if you can save $5000/month then by the end of the year you've got $60,000 which is a decent sum worth having. If you can only save $50/month then by the end of the year you'll have $600 which you still can't do a whole lot with, but with your monthly $50 you can enjoy an evening out which is fun.

God provides the reason we base every bad decision on. And the reason we base every good decision on.
