Different cultures have different ideas of what "adult" means. There are different ages for marriage, drinking, going to war, etc.

What age do you consider someone to be an adult?

Depends on mmany factors but the simplist is when they know right from wrong although that is overly simplistic. Depends on the mental makeup, training, culture, so many things

I don't think it's relevant to use a specific age. Guidelines for marriage, drinking etc do little more than highlight some really silly inconsistencies in the law as a whole.

In the US it seems absurd that you can own a gun at 18, you can join the armed forces and lay down your life for your country at 18, but you're not deemed mature enough to have a beer until 21.

In the UK it's legal to sleep with a 16-year-old girl, with her parents' consent you can marry her, you can have a child with her, but if you take a topless picture of her it's considered child porn and you become a sex offender.

Having done a fair bit of youth work I've seen kids as young as 12 who were remarkably mature, and people who were legally adults who were still frighteningly immature.

At what age do I consider someone to be an adult for what is the question cuz I mean, look at the different ages our states and country has for various adult things? Not even the government can decide on such matters.

Personally, they have to act responsibility... If they can not shoulder responsibilities.. then they are not mature enough to be considered an adult able to function on their own.

Maturity level isn't always linked to biological age. I have met some kids that are 15 and 16 and very responsible and I have met some 30 year olds that are immature and not trustworthy.

I agree with all the above...

I think generally, it has to do with being RESPONSIBLE for whatever it is they are invited/permitted to do.

I guess ULTIMATELY, I'd regard an "adult" to be one who is self-supportive, productive, contributing and responsible, which means a LOT of my peers in their late 20's and into their 30's aren't yet adults since they are still munching off Mom and Dad (or the government) in some way... But maybe that's a bit harsh. Or maybe not.

And yes, it's not connected to biological age. A 13 year old boy is biologically old enough to father a child but isn't adult enough to be one (generally speaking)... a 3 year old can drink beer but.....

Yup, society/government probably must set arbitrary ages (such as to drink, drive, vote, etc.) but they are very arbitrary.

They are still mature though, so I don't feel obliged to take care of em. Then they never grow up.

On the whold kids mature faster today and I think that legal age of consent at 18 is far to high. At the very least it should be lower to16. I just saw a case the other day where a 21 year old got charged for having sex with a 15 year old, I think that is wrong. If he was 30 maybe but not 21

In Holland its okay w 16, 14 if they both dont tell the police.
For marriage they have to be 18. Marriage w 16 is forbidden, fornication is okay.
That I find crazy. Saw a 16 y o boy who got his girlfriend pregnant and wanted to marry. He was more mature than a lot of 30+ year olds. But marriage may not.
