I'm a little confused. In Matthew when Jesus is resurrected he tells the disciples to go to Galilee and there he will meet with them Matthew 28:10 and it says they did so in Matthew 28:16. Matthew has Jesus giving his disciples the Great Commission in Galilee, but doesn't specifically mention the ascension.
Acts tells us that Jesus told his disciples "Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. . . ." Acts 1:5. Then Jesus ascends to the Father in Acts 1:9 up into the sky. That appears to happen on the Mount of Olives.
Then Luke tell sus that he was taken up into heaven in the vicinity of Bethany Luke 24:50

So, I'm not sure why it was important for them to go to Galilee if he ascended somewhere near the Mount of Olives? Maybe and probably I am missing something here

I think the answer is in Acts 1:3
He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God.

That's quite a lot of time after his Resurrection and Ascension for Jesus to go and speak about the Kingdom of God. A lot of things happened on mountains that were important in scripture, so it could be that the Great Commission was meant to happen on a mountain. On a mountain, Jesus could spread his arms (not that I know whether He did or not) to indicate that the Great Commission was for all.

That's really not an answer though on why he told them to go to Galilee when he ascended on the Mount of Olives or near there

But I did answer. There were 40 days from the Resurrection until the Ascension where Jesus did things, and we know some of those details but not all. Why, in your opinion, would it have been better to talk to the Apostles at the Mount of Olives?

The Resurrection stories in Matthew have Jesus telling the ladies who find the empty tomb that he will meet with them in Galilee. It appears he is very specific about wanting them to go there. Then later when the Ascension happens it appears to happen near or on the Mount of Olives. I was wondering why he would go to Galilee if they are just coming back to the area around Jerusalem in about a month.

Bethany was at... the Mount of Olives area...
