It may be that soon humanity will create some forms of artificial intelligence. Will "they" be good or bad or indifferent? If such were created and proved to be vastly quicker and more nimble than human beings at problem solving would you trust them?

I guess the question would be how far we would trust them rather than whether we would trust them at all.

Computers are already vastly quicker than humans at solving many kinds of problems. Anyone who doubts that is welcome to compare a relatively simple mathematical operation, like (665857/470832) ^ 2 with and without the assistance of a computer.

Obvious problems would appear if the computer malfunctions and has no manual override, and it's easy to see why an override would be removed if it's almost universally accepted that computers don't make mistakes while people do.

Computers are (currently) programmed and designed by people so if people make mistakes it is likely that computers do too.

Computers are dependant on a power source and thuis not infallible or totally reliable

Sure, but even now it's remarkable to see people assuming the computer could never make a mistake. Admittedly when the computer "makes a mistake" it's usually because the data is bad (hence the term GIGO - garbage in, garbage out) but people do seem to be developing a habit of blindly trusting the computer. Just look at a few cases of people driving their car off a jetty because the GPS didn't explicitly say to wait for the boat, people driving their car along railway lines, getting trucks stuck in narrow lanes, even walkers walking off a cliff edge because the GPS said it was another 100 feet and they weren't looking where they were going.

For most of those cases I'd reply "Against stupidity the gods themselves contend in vain"

Or, when programmers create an idiot proof system someone goes and creates a better class of idiot.

Another IT term - PEBCAK. Problem Exists Between Chair And Keyboard.

I want to add that without mistakes progress is impossible! Mistakes just alternative ways to solve some problems. Nature always looking for such alternatives. That it's why people so smart or so stupid Computer programs are not exception

I also saw something about a blue brain project. Makes me think of the image of the beast.

Question sounds like " be or not to be" :) Trust or don't trust? It's really complicated problem... If AI smarter , it' s natural to trust, but just we start to trust we became slaves...

Slaves to technology. Sounds about right if you see the younger generation walking around with their noses in their phones.
