I'm of two minds on the subject.

On the one hand, we know Satan tries to deceive us and ghosts are but one way the devil does so. On the other hand, there are things in this world that cannot be explained by physical senses and by explanations of science, reason and examination.....so where do they come from?

✦ Are Ghosts Real? Scripture Says the Dead Do NOT Return — But Something Else Does ✦​

Scripture is crystal clear that “ghosts” are not dead loved ones. The dead do not wander the earth, do not communicate, do not appear, and do not return. Every biblical passage on death teaches the same thing:

• the dead are conscious in the presence of God or in Hades (Luke 16:22–23)
• the dead do not roam the earth (Job 7:9–10)
• the dead do not communicate with the living (Eccl. 9:5–6)
• necromancy is forbidden because it contacts spirits, not the dead (Deut. 18:10–12)

So if the dead are not returning… what are people seeing?

✦ 1. “Ghosts” Are Demonic Imitations​

Demons have one goal: deception. And one of their most effective deceptions is impersonation.

Scripture shows demons:

• impersonate the dead
• impersonate gods
• impersonate angels
• impersonate truth
• impersonate light (2 Cor. 11:14)

When people see “ghosts,” “apparitions,” or “dead relatives,” they are encountering familiar spirits — demonic beings who mimic the appearance, voice, or mannerisms of the deceased.
This is why God forbids:

• mediums
• spiritists
• necromancers
• ghost‑seeking
• ancestor communication

Not because it “doesn’t work,” but because it does — and the spirits answering are not human.

✦ 2. Why Demons Pretend to Be the Dead​

Because it accomplishes three deadly lies:
Lie #1 — “The dead are still here.” This contradicts Jesus’ teaching on paradise and Hades.
Lie #2 — “You can communicate with them.” This contradicts God’s command to avoid spirit contact.
Lie #3 — “Death is not final.” This undermines the gospel, resurrection, and judgment.
Demons impersonate the dead to destroy the doctrine of resurrection and erode trust in God’s Word.

✦ 3. Scripture’s Verdict: The Dead Do Not Return​

Job 7:9–10

“He who goes down to the grave does not come up… he does not return to his house.”

Job gives one of the clearest statements in Scripture: once a person dies, they do not return to their earthly dwelling. This is not poetic exaggeration — it is theological reality. Job is describing the fixed boundary God has placed between the living and the dead. The dead do not wander, visit, haunt, or re‑enter their former environments. Their earthly life is closed, their location is fixed, and their return is impossible. Any “appearance” of a dead person is therefore not the dead person — it is a spiritual counterfeit. Job’s words slam the door shut on the idea of human ghosts and expose every apparition as something other than human.

“The dead know nothing.”

Solomon is not saying the dead are unconscious in the sense of annihilation — he is saying the dead have no participation in earthly affairs. They do not know what happens on earth, do not interact with the living, and do not communicate across realms. Their earthly knowledge has ceased because their earthly life has ceased. This verse destroys the idea that dead loved ones are “checking in,” “watching over us,” or “sending signs.” The dead are not roaming the earth; they are in the realm God has assigned to them. Any “knowledge” or “communication” attributed to the dead is therefore not from the dead — it is demonic impersonation designed to deceive.
Luke 16:26

“A great chasm has been fixed… none can cross.”

Jesus Himself gives the final, decisive verdict: between the realm of the dead and the realm of the living, God has fixed a chasm that cannot be crossed. No one passes from death back into earthly life. No one crosses from Hades to Paradise. No one returns to deliver messages, warnings, or comfort. The separation is absolute, unbreakable, and divinely enforced. This is Jesus’ direct refutation of every ghost story, every medium’s claim, and every “spirit visitation.” If the dead cannot cross, then anything that does cross is not the dead — it is a spiritual being violating boundaries God has set. And Scripture identifies those beings as unclean spirits, not human souls.
The dead are not wandering. They are not visiting. They are not haunting. They are not communicating.
Every “ghost” is either:

• a demonic manifestation, or
• a psychological projection, or
• a cultural myth

But never the dead.

✦ 4. Why This Matters​

Because ghost‑hunting, mediumship, and “contacting loved ones” is not harmless entertainment — it is spiritual exposure to demonic influence.
The enemy uses grief, nostalgia, and longing to lure people into spiritual vulnerability.
The Bible’s warning is not superstition — it is protection.

✦ 5. The Christian Hope​

We do not need ghosts. We do not need apparitions. We do not need mediums.
We have something infinitely better:
The resurrection. The return of Christ. The reunion of the saints. The promise of eternal life.
The dead in Christ are not wandering — they are with the Lord, awaiting the resurrection.
And that is far better than any “ghost story.”
