I'm really not sure what "ready" means. I thought were were always suppose to be ready for Christ's return?

Advent makes no practical difference to me, so I suppose I'm ready for it.

I did consider getting an adult advent calendar (maybe one with a sample of whisky or bourbon behind each door), but never got around to it so even today, when I'd open the first door, has no particular significance.

Here is some good information about Advent:

The first coming refers to the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem, while the second coming represents the anticipated return of Christ in glory. This dual perspective creates a sense of anticipation and hope as Lutherans prepare their hearts and minds to celebrate the birth of Jesus and eagerly await His second coming.

Here is info about an Advent wreath:
The four candles placed on the wreath represent the four weeks of Advent. The first candle, often referred to as the "hope" candle, represents the eager anticipation and longing for the coming of Christ. The second candle, known as the "peace" candle, signifies the inner calm and tranquility that Christ brings into our lives. The third candle, the "joy" candle, represents the overwhelming happiness that fills our hearts as we draw closer to the birth of Christ. Finally, the fourth candle, the "love" candle, symbolizes the unconditional love that God has for humanity, demonstrated through the gift of His son.
