A hypochondriac is someone who lives with the fear that they have a serious, but undiagnosed medical condition, even though diagnostic tests show there is nothing wrong with them. Hypochondriacs experience extreme anxiety from the bodily responses most people take for granted. For example, they may be convinced that something as simple as a sneeze is the sign they have a horrible disease.

Do you know someone who is a hypochondriac?

Me. But just because I am a hypochondriac doesn’t mean I can’t get sick.

Before they developed Lupus drugs in the '50s, there was a 60% chance you'd die from it within 5 years. According to my rheumatologist I can't take those drugs because due to other health issues I have, they'd kill me. I've had Lupus for 22 years. I expected to die long ago.
I guess I'm an upside-down hypochondriac. Or something.

I knew a guy at university who was convinced he had "the big C". When he asked me what I thought I'd never heard the term before. He thought he had brain cancer. His reasoning - he'd had a headache all day.

He took an aspirin and all his symptoms were gone by the next day.
