Just saw another news article that is now stating that 14 out of 100 people will catch the Delta variant of those who are vaccinated. That's a huge move from 1 in 10,000 will have a breakthrough.
True, although it's not entirely unexpected that a variant will behave in a different manner. Sometimes they become more or less contagious, or they become more or less effective at bypassing immune systems, or they become more or less dangerous if they succeed in causing an infection.
From what I can gather the Delta variant is more contagious and more effective at bypassing immune systems but not significantly more dangerous if it does take hold. If the vaccine is 86% effective against it rather than 99.99% effective that's a big difference but unless the virus is more dangerous once it's taken hold it's not as concerning as those figures might suggest.
It seems like we're potentially back to a situation where the immune-compromised and otherwise vulnerable need to be cautious again but most of us can ignore it.
