    Home renovation

Do the work yourself. At least that way if you make a hash of it you've only got yourself to blame.

    Adam and Eve’s sin

I've always considered it to be an issue of free will. The choice to obey is meaningless in the absence of the option to disobey. So when there's a single rule - the regime is basically "do whatever you want but don't eat from that one tree" the option to disobey is introduced. So now obedience...

    Don't Go There!

Worst is such a subjective term. Places that I wouldn't recommend because I thought they were dumps are places that people I know seek out because they love it there. Places I love for my own reasons are places people I know hate because they aren't looking for the same things. For any given...

    Weight Loss Question

My clothes are baggy. My old hiking shorts are almost comical now. They are so baggy I have to constantly hold them up while threading my belt through the belt loops. Even my newer shorts are very loose and the most recent pair of jeans I bought have more spare room in them than I would have...

    Lämmchen's Workout Thread

I need to get back to the woods. I realised the other day that I haven't been hiking since I took my friend's son out a couple of months ago. Lots of walking and running since then but no hiking. Now it's cooler I won't come home bathed in sweat, which is always a plus.

Trans girl, 11, leads Orlando Pride parade

Funny how a child isn't allowed a single cigarette because they aren't considered responsible enough, yet apparently they know without any doubt at all that they want to make such fundamental changes to their body. There's a difference between being a girl and wanting to play with things...

    Lämmchen's Workout Thread

Today's suggested workout was sprint repeats. I didn't fancy the thought of sprint repeats because it's very gusty, but decided to run a local 10k route to see what sort of time I could set. I think I can shave a nice slice off my personal best around that route but it wasn't going to happen...

Do you take your pets everywhere with you?

I really don't understand the obsession with taking pets everywhere. Most places aren't designed for pets.

    Do you like self-checkout?

A question regarding the cameras is what else they capture and what is done with the footage? If they capture enough detail to identify a shopper and the items they are (hopefully) scanning, can they also capture the number on your credit card when you go to pay?

    What small home upgrade

A window air conditioning unit made a huge difference compared to no air conditioning. Blowing insulation into wall cavities made the house much warmer through the winter and saved a lot of money in heating. It cost me $25 to rent the blower and $100 for two bags of insulation. I reckon it paid...

    Netflix raises prices

The thing with Netflix is that so many of their shows are hit-and-miss as far as quality is concerned. Every once in a while you can find an absolute gem on there. But then there's a lot of dross to wade through to find it, movies that look like they might be good but turn out to be drivel...

    Ad Block Question

Youtube has become all but unusable with so many ads. If it's not annoying enough to have to sit through two ads before watching a video, when something breaks at a random point part way through to screen another ad or two I typically give up watching it. There's nothing on Youtube important...

    Do Americans have privacy rights?

Interesting thought. It would be a shame if an errant drone crashed in the yard close enough in front of the mower that it got mangled. Or if the dog thought it was a new toy and chewed on it, before dumping it in the trees at the end of the yard. Or if the kids found it and tried playing catch...

    Smartwatch

I use a Garmin that measures all sorts of things. Pulse, heart rate variability, sleep (although not hugely well), and it tracks my exercise. If I work hard enough it can determine lactate threshold, estimate VO2 max and so on. And of course it counts steps. It monitors training status to tell...

So... What are YOU doing? - Part 8

Got the last major strip of soundproofing material screwed to the ceiling joists. This part was awkward because it needed access to a corner of the room where I lifted the floor, so there's not much to stand my ladder on. And even a small piece of this stuff is heavy and unwieldy, so positioning...

A series of interviews for a job

I work for myself so interviews never really happened. As with so much else I guess a lot would depend on the company and the role. I wouldn't expect a succession of interviews to secure a job as a janitor and wouldn't expect to land a senior engineer's position with a 10-minute online meeting...

    Do you like self-checkout?

That won't go down well. You can either check me out, or trust me to check myself out. I have no interest in proving to someone that I did their job correctly. I can't imagine I'm the only one who would find it unacceptable.

    Pray the Lord's Prayer weekly?

We don't specifically pray it weekly. I don't know if there's any specific reason, although for myself I find saying the same prayer repeatedly can feel very forced - it becomes about reciting something rather than necessarily taking the time to think about the words we are saying.

How does your church collect offerings?

We stopped passing the basket during covid, putting it at the back of the church for people to put money in as they enter. It seems a much more efficient way to do it, sometimes it feels like a very artificial break in the progress of the church service to wait until the basket has been handed...

Should a college degree be waived?

It should only be required if some aspect of the job requires it. It's easy to see why someone working in nuclear physics might need a degree in nuclear physics. It's harder to see why someone with 20 years of corporate experience but no degree should be excluded from a job in favor of someone...
