Controversial: strange fire ... first presentation.

You read my post with an interesting spin on what it says. My main interest is in what people teach and what claims they make for the sources of their teaching. Here's another example

Are you offended when I reject the bad and stick with the good? Okay. I will not argue against your claim about me because I reckon I know what I did read better than you do. Anyway, the point I sought to present is that there are leaders in the Charismatic/pentecostal movement who are...

The Official Chat Thread - Part 2

You need my mail box, going down to it and back up must be 3 or 4 floors :P

    So... What are YOU doing?

I suppose I ought to wander down to the mail box and see what's in it :)

Many people say that the pope's alleged infallibility is too absurd to be accepted and that hence they are not Catholics because of it (and other things) yet people accept the idea of some chap saying "thus says the Lord ..." about some dyspeptic aural hallucination they've had or a word from...

    Easter thread

As far as I am aware the only historical link is from saint Bede saying that the Saxons had a goddess whose name was related to the spelling for Easter in his time. That is a rather weak link.

    Interesting pocket watches ... cheap

Many of my formal dress trousers have a pocket watch pocket. Sometimes they call it a "change" pocket.

What makes a person a saint?

No, we're talking about both hear & now and the hear-after. The saints in heaven are saints "now".

    Easter thread

It appears to be from a German word for east "Ostern".

I think the "balanced" response to "the laughter thing" is to say "what a lot of balderdash" and move on :)

    Easter thread

I do not think that "Easter" is named after any fertility god or goddess.

    Baptism by sprinkling

So it is your version of a Catechism on baptism then, some sort of infallible truth that you cannot possibly improve upon or summarise because it is holy and stuff?

    Interesting pocket watches ... cheap

It ought to be a law to have a pocket watch pocket in men's trousers! :)

What makes a person a saint?

In heaven and after the resurrection none of the faithful sin.

They are not attached to one's wrist either and I like that.

    Baptism by sprinkling

I did not read the link at all. I said so in my last post. I do not intend to read a long article. If you are incapable of articulating in a few words what is not symbolic about baptism and what it does then I reckon that it must be symbolic and the long article is blowing smoke and hand waving...

Yes, I think that is the gist of the first few minutes of his presentation. He's quite anti-catholicism too, so you're far from being alone in the targets he selects. But on the matter of discernment, how do you cope with the semi-crazy claims made by some folk who think they've had a word from God?

This is a very special period of time for us here at Grace Church, at least in our little family, because Patricia, my wife and I, are celebrating our fiftieth wedding anniversary and I at least want you to see the gift - the best gift that God gave me in life. Patricia, would you stand up and...

How do Orthodox Christians calculate which day is Good Friday?

I think that the length of the months came from Egypt and from the little over 29 day cycle of the moon. I think that a seven day week may have come from the creation story or may have come from other sources too. All of creation comes from God yet not everything is intended for use nor is...
