    If it didn't last was it repentance? It may have been worldly sorrow motivated by sympathy for those who died and fear. But repentance is turning around from a life of indifference and hatred towards God to a life of love for God and obedience to him.

    Is that a rhetorical question? The verse says they would receive power after the Holy Spirit came upon them and they would be Christ's witnesses in Jerusalem and so forth.

    Saint Paul mentioned that some preached the gospel out of bad motives yet he was pleased nonetheless because the gospel was being preached (Philippians 1:15-17). Those who did it out of bad motives surely were not preaching under the influence of the Holy Spirit, were they?

    You are right and it does not say that everybody who claims that the promises are theirs is speaking truthfully. Matthew 25:31-46 teaches the lesson that some will be sure of their good standing with God only to discover that they are condemned. There's more to living a Christian life of faith...
