I hear this phrase used a lot. What Jesus said at the Last Supper WAS NOT LITERALLY TRUE! He did not LITERALLY hand them a chunk of human flesh to eat. He did not LITERALLY pour them a cup of human blood to drink. At the flip side, the Earthly body of Jesus at the last supper was not made of...
Rather than invest a great deal of time in all of your quotes, I decided to start with the first Church Father on your list. I was shocked to find that none of the quotes that you actually provided appear to support your position.
This quote seems to be a beautiful proclaimation that Ignatius...
How can the physical body, that Thomas touched and chewed the fish and bread, be the communion wafer?
The 'wine' I had at a Catholic Church tasted like grape juice, not blood (I know, I have tasted blood).
If you mean this in a literal sense, how do you reconcile it with your 5 senses that say...
I believe that Jesus had two natures in one person as well (and still does, for what it might be worth).
I also think that the Godhead eternally existing as one being in three 'persons' (a mystery which can never be fully comprehended) and the Godhead existing outside of our time-space frame...
I hate word games, so I'm going to take your argument at face value.
There must not be ANY Christians (or at least no more than one Christian) in any church or gathering of believers that I have ever attended. As you say, Jesus IS ubiquitous and where two or more are gathered in his name...
Not to rain on anyones parade, but don't these Creeds tend to be carefully worded to say as little as necessary to stop the gross heracy that the council was created to address, while accomodating the theological debate among orthodoxy on other issues. In general they seem to reject one...
Hopefully, it isn't too late for me to take a shot at this.
Prior to MY salvation, I had a sin nature (fallen nature, Adamic curse, flesh ... take your pick of your favorite phrase) and no Holy Spirit dwelling within me (because MY hour had not yet come for God's grace to be revealed). Thus...
Two small points (hopefully on topic):
1. I take it from your response that none contradict the statements made of tenses in Biblical Greek (since your response mentions none).
2. It is rather easy to say 'All the ECF's writings', but you have not provided even a single quote from a single...
You should reread post #27.
I have not been following the positions close enough to keep track of who believes what, but it does not explicitly state that it is all symbolic. It DOES provide valuable clues how the Greek grammar is different from the English grammar of the translation which is...
Can you 'believe' something without 'knowing' it?
Ultimately, getting into heaven (like so much in life) is all about WHO you know rather than what you know ... his initials are JC. :)
Thank you for that, it was enlightening and informative.
Allow me to be VERY clear in my criticism.
With respect to Trans-anything (substantiation, substitution) or even the symbolic-only view of at least one Baptist Church I attended ... I am completely and utterly indifferent. I have many...
My history is a little fuzzy, but isn't that about the same time that people stopped buying 'forgiveness' (indulgences), trusting the Pope as the final interpreter of scripture, and started to actually read the Bible for themselves?
Historically, they gave up a lot of bad habits in a short...
Where was it shown in scripture that Jesus was 'everywhere' (or even two places) at once? Where is it shown in scripture that Jesus is 'literally' living in everyone? Isn't that the job of the Holy Spirit? Didn't Jesus say that he was leaving and he would return?
Jesus isn't a literal head...
MoreCoffee, that is 99% in agreement with Calvinism. The only point that Calvinism would have any disagreement on in what you posted is that a Calvinist would believe that having been granted a new heart (nature) and sealed with the Holy Spirit, it is not possible for one of God's sheep...
Briefly touched on in post 31 (where the focus was on works not being part of salvation, but the fruit of salvation).
From the part you underlined and your statement about James and Abraham, would it be correct to conclude that a Catholic has no promise of eternal security? You are one 'not...
Could you define "salvation" cause I'm having a heck of a time following you. One moment you seem to post that no church teaches salvation based on works, and then in another you post that Abraham was 'justified' by his works.
Color me confused.
I can't speak for 'most people', but for me it has nothing to do with theological tradition and everything to do with all those verses where scripture unambiguously says that our salvation and justification is not by works.
(The Catholic Bible does have the book of Romans in it, right?)...
A nit pick ... but God did not speak the Word in John 1:1, it was eternally existing. A more literal, but clumsy English translation might be "Before the beginning of the beginning, the Word existed."
Still, you ask a good question. Let me get back to you on that.
For now, it is not JUST a...
