Don't forget He raised Lazarus too.
You make my case that mediums and spiritists can't do what God can. There was no calling up of the dead involved in the Transfiguration, which Jesus Himself called a vision (Gr. orama)
Mat 17:9 And as they came down from the mountain, Jesus charged them...
I don't believe mediums and spiritists actually call up and communicate with the actual dead, or that the witch of Endor had ever actually succeeded in doing more than invoke a familiar spirit. The context of Scriptural warnings not to consult the dead implicate the attempt rather than the deed...
Highly Educated Comment On 1Samuel 28:11-14 from Believer's Bible Commentary:
28:11-14 Commentators are disagreed as to what actually happened next. Some feel that an evil spirit impersonated Samuel, while others believe that God interrupted the séance unexpectedly by allowing the real Samuel...
Adding to the discussion of demons it should be noted they do know true stuff and do get some things right.
Jas 2:19 You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe—and tremble!
Mar 1:23-26 Now there was a man in their synagogue with an unclean spirit. And he cried...
The Psalmist waxed eloquent on the subject:
Psa 91:9-12 Because you have made the LORD, who is my refuge, Even the Most High, your dwelling place, (10) No evil shall befall you, Nor shall any plague come near your dwelling; (11) For He shall give His angels charge over you, To keep you in...
Already addressed. They were when Peter penned his epistle, hence the statement.
Jesus went in the Spirit in Noah's day
Preached through Noah
To the reprobate wicked
who the perished in the flood
and were imprisoned in Hades at the time Peter penned his epistle.
Exactly, which is why Noah is written up as a preacher of righteousness, the Spirit of Christ being in him as he preached to sinful humanity . . . now get this . . . for the benefit of future generations . . .
1Pe 1:10-12 Of which salvation the prophets have enquired and searched diligently...
I believe that salvation is only available to those who come to faith in Christ in this life, and that the Bible states that after Christ by His Spirit preached through Noah, only the 8 souls in Noah's family were saved from the Great Flood and those who persished were in Hades at the time Peter...
The spirits Peter is talking about are those who perished in the flood, whom Jesus preached to through Noah as per the context carried through from 1 Peter 1:10-11
(10) Of which salvation the prophets have enquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you...
There are many commentaries to explore, but some are at variance with each other so it becomes a matter of personally weighing up the most plausible interpretation, hence my views expressed in this thread.
The reference to Jesus preaching is not to be construed as taking place after His death...
None of those verses indicate the unsaved dead can be saved before the Day of Judgment.
Let's look at the immediate context of 1 Peter 4:6
1 Peter 4:3-6 (KJV)
3 For the time past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, when we walked in lasciviousness, lusts...
There are, of course, as many have discovered, different ways to benefit from reading the Bible.
Examples:
Biographical - examining the life and times of Bible characters
Topical - finding passages that deal with the same subject
Whole Book - analysing verse by verse to construct an outline...
To me that's like saying I ate breakfast yesterday so I won't have breakfast again for a year or two.
"Give us this day our daily bread"
Jer 3:15 And I will give you pastors according to mine heart, which shall feed you with knowledge and understanding.
There's no rule you can only read from one book of the Bible on any given day, so may I suggest a chapter or two of Numbers to start with and then something from the NT to go on with.
I'm in multiple books of the Bible of a day at times.
