  1. Castle Church

    Purgatory

Valid points around from both of you :) I will get back to the topic at hand now, my apologies for getting off course :)
  2. Castle Church

    Purgatory

Well, sure. But that kind of statement harks back to what I was saying earlier: all churches make similar statements. Would the Anglican Communion say that the person chosen to be the Archbishop of Canterbury was not directed by the HS? Would the ELCA say the HS did not direct the correct...
  3. Castle Church

    Purgatory

Valid point, but the same can be said of all the different Christian denominations....if the HS is leading each one, why do the doctrines differ? The selecting of a pope is certainly one aspect the RCC needs to address, but all Christian denominations will have something akin to it in regards...

    Purgatory

Well, the RCIA class was just the basics of the doctrine, the homilies were more touching on it than teaching. But then, in depth theology isn't really the point of the homily or the Mass anyways.
  5. Castle Church

    Purgatory

FWIW, it was mentioned in my old parish on occasion, particularly around sermons or discussions on Reconciliation as well as being talked about in the RCIA program.

    The RCC Claim

Well, the first is more or less opinion, so we can certainly "agree to disagree" on that. The second claim is supportable based on the letters of St. Clement, among other reasons....but it is also debatable. I honestly think both of my claims are entirely debatable for being correct and...

    The RCC Claim

Well, as Albion said, it is because the RCC can trace their origins back to the 1st century, and with a reasonable claim to the apostles and Peter. While the claim has historic debatably, the mere fact that it can be debated means there is at least some reason to believe the claim. Can other...

    The RCC Claim

That's a pretty good summary of the Lutheran position, thanks for taking the time for it. I like the term that is often used to account for the unaccountable: "shrouded in antiquity" or "shrouded in mystery".

    Volunteering

I was involved in the Knights of Columbus at my old Parish, I intend on becoming active with them again when my annulment is processed. The Knights tend to do a fair amount of community work and general things at the church around the year. My recent ELCA church did not really have a lot of...

    The RCC Claim

At first Luther was OK with the idea of a Pope, but as his theology progressed he went the opposite direction. In general Lutherans don't understand Apostolic Succession, and by extension the Papacy, in the same manner as Catholics or Orthodox. As to whether Luther agreed with the succession...

How has church changed for you since this pandemic started?

No. I do not write in cryptic messages and code. OK.

    The RCC Claim

Well, the disagreements between Luther and the RCC are really more in depth. Theology, history, politics, etc. are all behind the schism. Many theological views that Luther held in opposition to the RCC have been smoothed over by time and dialogue. Thinking about either position on purely a...

How has church changed for you since this pandemic started?

Basically as you describe, a non denominational church service that happens to have communion at one service (out of three) on Sunday. "Low" as in their liturgy, the "smells and bells". In general, a "High" view of the liturgy would have the Divine Service being very similar to a Catholic Mass...

How has church changed for you since this pandemic started?

In the past I have, the LCMS church is actually the closest church to my home in general. But theologically neither really works for me. for a number of reasons. The LCMS church near me is also pretty low, liturgically, the WELS even more so. The ELCA church I was a member of had a Traditional...

How has church changed for you since this pandemic started?

My church that I was a member at (ELCA) continued its lurch to liberalism, to the point that was too much for me. At this point I have started my process to return to the Catholic Church. I now consider myself Catholic again (rather than a Lutheran lapsed Catholic), I am just in the long process...

    CH Catholics roll call

Thanks :) Neither actually, I was confirmed in the RCC.

    CH Catholics roll call

I just changed my "faith" back to Catholic from Lutheran on these forums. After lapsing from the RCC and going to the Lutheran church for several years I have made a full circle. I am still in the process of regularizing my situation, however.

    Studying other denominations

None of that is necessarily contrary to a liturgical service. The Lutheran Divine Service has several different settings and each setting has different options for prayers to be said. One could go quite some time without repeating if one so chose. As for screens, many churches that have...
  19. Castle Church

    Studying other denominations

In general, a church that follows a Liturgy such as the Divine Service, Novus Ordo Mass, Tridentine Mass, liturgy of St John Chrysostom, etc. Lutherans (for the most part) follow the Divine Service, as you note your church is a bit of an anomaly in this case. Most Lutheran and Anglican churches...

Did Jesus celebrate the Holiday that commemorates the Maccabees?

And that is a reasonable position to take. But it is a different reason than the posited OP in this thread: that because Jews celebrate Hanukkah and Hanukkah is the celebration of the success of the Maccabees (as described in the books of Maccabees), those books should be used as scripture...
