What foods are forbidden or are avoided?

Meat? (Pork, Chicken, Beef, other poultry)
Seafood? Shrimp? Crab? Lobster?
Coffee or Tea?
Alcohol?
Beer and Wine?
Hard liquor?
To say nothing of Genetically Modified foods?

Now some people claim that Jesus told his disciples to eat whatever was given to them if they went into someone's home or He gives permission to us to eat anything, is that really what He said?

If you see how diabetes, cancers, and even the damage to our minds as it kills the cells in the brain to say nothing of what its doing to our body. Here is something I came across that sheds light on it.. "The fundamental concern as we look to reform health in America is the known reality that most chronic diseases that afflict Americans are predominantly lifestyle induced; and the belief is that the vast majority of heart attacks and strokes could be prevented if people were willing to adopt healthy lifestyle behaviors. In addition, healthy lifestyles would impact a significant number of cancers which are also believed to be related to lifestyle exposures, especially to obesity, cigarettes, and other toxins.

Over the past 50 years, the health of Americans has gotten worse, and now 71% of Americans are overweight or obese—not 66%, which was reported 5 years ago.1 That means a staggering 100 million people in America are obese. Today, eating processed foods and fast foods may kill more people prematurely than cigarette smoking.2"

Eat as much of anything you want, it won't keep you out of heaven.

In fact, it might even get you there faster.

In any event, if you want to be healthy and particularly if you want to lose weight get MSG and HFCS entirely out of your diet. You don't need them, they are used to induce you to eat more, and you can get along just fine without them the way we did a few generations back.

FWIW, that won't be easy to do unless you make all, or at least most, of your food from scratch, something else that is subtly discouraged in today's world.

If you want to conduct a little experiment with yourself and have just a couple of bucks to do it, go buy a small bottle of regular corn syrup and a small bottle of corn syrup with HFCS added and see which one you use up first.

(you might have to look harder to find regular corn syrup, the one that used to be the only kind you could find)

Within Adventist doctrine about the only foods above that Adventists normally don't eat are pork and shellfish; quoting the Wiki,
The Seventh-day Adventist Church follows the Old Testament's Mosaic Law on dietary restrictions, which is also the basis for the Jewish dietary laws. They only eat meat of a herbivore with split hooves and birds without a crop and without webbed feet; they also do not eat shellfish of any kind, and they only eat fish with scales. Any other animal is considered unclean and not suitable for eating. All vegetables, fruits and nuts are allowed.
So for instance, in regards to flesh foods (a/k/a meat), foods such as chicken, beef, lamb, turkey and fish such as tuna, salmon, bass, carp, cod, flounder, haddock, halibut, mackerel, perch, sardines, sole and tilapia.

On the other hand, meats such as pork, shrimp, catfish, swordfish, sturgeon, crawfish, lobster, clams, oysters and mussel are considered unclean.

Now, as for drinks? In regards to drinks, for most Adventists its' usually individual preference. I myself drink both tea and coffee though I've started moving away from caffeinated teas and coffee for hibiscus tea and coffee substitutes.

Processed foods are the problem, not spiritually but physically. Cook meals at home and you'll be healthier. There are many other reasons why people get obese and some of it is thyroid issues and then there are medications that are keeping people from metabolizing food properly, as well as making them extremely hungry.

Very good post from my perspective. Myself, I like shellfish, and I love pork. I believe it is the most flavorful meat that there is. My belief is that you should eat all things in moderation. Too much of something is never good for you. Shellfish should be cooked. Years ago I used to eat raw oysters. They are excellent when they are fresh. These days if I eat oysters I have them fried. I think you need to have some common sense. In the old days, pork was bad to eat because of parasites. These days farm raised pork is very good and safe. I like my beer also. Too much makes me gain weight, so I drink the lighter version and less of it. When people look down on you because of what you eat, I say good, there is more for me. I'm going to die someday from something, but I'm not going to suffer all the way there...

Went on a holistic cruise, and they served us vegan and vegetarian at Breakfast, Lunch and Supper and had it at the Buffet and all the speakers went over the best things to eat. The first thing out of their mouths were the studies from Loma Linda and what it showed, and there were 20 or more speakers... amazing... When we get to heaven the food on the welcome table will be astounding...

Very simply, many who call themselves Christians are not, as Jesus noted when he says "I never knew you".

I think we should always constantly examine ourselves to make sure we are not becoming one of them without realizing we are.

Go look up the Blue Zones - places where people generally live longer than on average; one of the places mentioned was Loma Linda, California. By most accounts, people there live from 6-10 years longer than others elsewhere and a lot of it comes from the fact that about half the population there are practicing Seventh-Day Adventists.

Healthline did an article a few years back on the Adventist health and diet message from a nutritional/medical point of view...

In Isaiah, before the new heavens and new earth are established, God speaks about a rebellious people which walk in a way that is not good, after their own thoughts; a people that provoke Me to anger continually to My face, (65:2,3). One of the reasons these people provoke the Lord is because they eat swine's flesh, and broth of unclean meat is in their pots, (65:4).

Also, God declares that He will consume those people who eat swine's flesh, detestable things, and mice. (Isa.66:17). Again, the context of this prophecy is the end times, right before the new heaven and new earth. This would certainly seem to suggest that the Lord will still expect an obedience to His dietary laws.

And Revelation talks of unclean birds which doesn't make sense if all animals have been made clean.

There is more to the diet / health laws than just the 'clean' & 'unclean" (not clean, abominable) divisions, known long before Moses (Gen. 7:2,8, 8:20): God stated, that a person (not merely Hebrew / Israelite / Jew, see Exo. 12:19,38,48-49, 20:10; Num. 11:4; Lev. 17:12,15, 18:26; Deu. 5:14; &c.) could also not eat any:
  • [01] "blood": Gen. 9:4; Lev. 3:17, 7:26-27,33, 17:12,14, 19:26; Deu. 12:16,23-25,27, 15:23; 1 Sam. 14:32-34; Eze. 33:25; Act. 15:20,29, 21:25
  • [02] "fat" (animal): Gen. 4:4; Lev. 3:17, 7:23-25,31,33; 1 Sam. 2:16-17
  • [03] "any thing that dieth of itself" (too old or sick / diseased): Lev. 7:24, 17:15, 22:8; Deu. 14:21; Eze. 4:14, 44:31
  • [04] "that which is torn with beasts" (injured): Exo. 22:31; Lev. 7:24,15, 22:8; Eze. 44:31
  • [05] "strangled": Act. 15:20,29, 21:25
  • [06] "not seethe a kid in his mother's milk": Exo. 23:19, 34:26; Deu. 14:21
  • [07] of the Passover it is stated, "Eat not of it raw, nor sodden at all with water, but roast with fire": Exo. 12:9
  • [08] "the flesh that toucheth any unclean thing shall not be eaten; it shall be burnt with fire": Lev. 7:19
  • [09] of the sacrifices, "of the flesh of the sacrifice on the third day shall be burnt with fire.", "And if any of the flesh of the sacrifice of his peace offerings be eaten at all on the third day, it shall not be accepted, neither shall it be imputed unto him that offereth it: it shall be an abomination, and the soul that eateth of it shall bear his iniquity.": Lev. 7:17-18
  • [10] "raw" (uncooked flesh (see "roast with fire"), unboiled (see "sodden")): Exo. 12:9; Deu. 16:7; 1 Sam. 2:13-15,17
even if such things were from a 'clean' animal. That pretty much eliminates most grocery store 'flesh' products. No alcohol, either (Pro. 20:1, 31:3-7) - What does the Bible say about "wine"? Are Christians to drink it?

God's Health Law for mankind begun in Genesis 1:
  • Gen 1:26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
  • Gen 1:27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
  • Gen 1:28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.
  • Gen 1:29 And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.
  • Gen 1:30 And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat: and it was so.
In the beginning, God (Elohiym), made mankind (man & woman) after their "image", and their "likeness", which means after the inward (spiritual) & outwardness (physical) of the Elohiym. God bears the fruit of the Holy Spirit, and eats of it (Jhn. 4:32 KJB). The Son, always eats the words (bread) of the Father (Jhn. 6:57 KJB). The original God-given diet of mankind, was from the mouth of God (words) for the spirit / mind / heart, and for the physical, was the "meat" (food) of "every herb bering seed", "and every tree, in which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed.

" The word "meat" means, in it's primary and first definition,
There was no creature death before sin.

God's Health Law for mankind continued in Genesis 2:
  • Gen 2:7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
  • Gen 2:8 And the LORD God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed.
  • Gen 2:9 And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.
  • Gen 2:15 And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.
  • Gen 2:16 And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat:
  • Gen 2:17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.
Genesis 2, continues the same ideas and practices as in Genesis 1. Mankind was created by God, and was then taken and placed in a "Garden" (Eden of earth), and then "out of the ground made the LORD God (JEHOVAH Elohiym) to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food", even the "tree of life". Mankind was to live by every word / command of God, as the LORD God said, "Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat", "But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it". This was to address the spiritual, which could also affect the physical. Mankind was to be physically healthy by eating of the provided "fruit" of the "trees" in the "garden" "of Eden" (of earth).

There was no creature death before sin.

God's Health Law for mankind continued in Genesis 3 (a violation in diet brings death):
  • Gen 3:1 Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?
  • Gen 3:2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:
  • Gen 3:3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.
  • Gen 3:4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:
  • Gen 3:5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.
  • Gen 3:6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.
  • Gen 3:7 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.
  • Gen 3:8 And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden.
  • Gen 3:9 And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?
  • Gen 3:10 And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.
  • Gen 3:11 And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?
  • Gen 3:12 And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat.
  • Gen 3:13 And the LORD God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.
  • Gen 3:14 And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:
  • Gen 3:15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
  • Gen 3:16 Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.
  • Gen 3:17 And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;
  • Gen 3:18 Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field;
  • Gen 3:19 In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.
  • Gen 3:20 And Adam called his wife's name Eve; because she was the mother of all living.
  • Gen 3:21 Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them.
  • Gen 3:22 And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:
  • Gen 3:23 Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken.
  • Gen 3:24 So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.
Mankind disbelieved in the words of God and so disobeyed the words of God, and accepted the words of another in their place. The first disobedience in the spiritual (eating of another's words) and the physical (eating that which God commanded not be eaten) brought about spiritual and physical death, not only of mankind, but also of the first animal creature, a lamb (Gen. 3:21; Rev. 13:8 KJB). Disobedience in God's dietary health law, brought about animal death, and mankind's death.

dEATh

What brought about death? Disobedience in that which one was to eat.

Should more death be brought simply to satisfy one's own desires, rather than the original perfect will of God? Mankind was still not given any allowance from God to eat animal flesh, but was to "till the ground" and eat of the fruit of the earth, for mankind's own good, to remind mankind of the humble and lowly dust from which Adam was made. God alone is to exalt the lowly. That which exalts itself, shall be brought down to the dust by God, for their own good. Mankind was to rely entirely upon the "seed", and the promise of God's word. God was going to redeem mankind, and bring them back to the original "Garden" of "Eden" state (Mic. 4:8 KJB).

God's Health Law for mankind continued in Genesis 4 (rejecting God's word, brings more death)
  • Gen 4:1 And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the LORD.
  • Gen 4:2 And she again bare his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.
  • Gen 4:3 And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD.
  • Gen 4:4 And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering:
Mankind, as descended from Adam / Eve, continued in the diet prescribed by God for physical well-being, and ate of "the fruit of the ground". Animal death was still not for man's physical sustenance as Abel was a "keeper of sheep", not a 'killer of sheep' to satisfy his own personal carnal desire. The animal death was the symbol of the sacrifice of Jesus (Gen. 3:21; Rev. 13:8 KJB), because of sin, and disbelief and disobedience to God's word. Abel believed in God's promise, bringing what God asked for, one of "the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof", and offered it as a burnt offering in faith. Notice, also that the entire animal, along with the "fat" belonged to God, and was to be entirely consumed in God's sacred fire, and not one piece was to be consumed by the gut of man and his burning desires for flesh. Cain did not believe in God's promise, and "brought of the fruit of the ground", showing that his faith was not in God's words, but in his own works. He then tried to convince his brother to be like him.

  • Gen 4:5 But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell.
  • Gen 4:6 And the LORD said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen?
  • Gen 4:7 If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.
  • Gen 4:8 And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.
  • Gen 4:9 And the LORD said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: Am I my brother's keeper?
  • Gen 4:10 And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto me from the ground.
  • Gen 4:11 And now art thou cursed from the earth, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother's blood from thy hand;
  • Gen 4:12 When thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength; a fugitive and a vagabond shalt thou be in the earth.
Abel & Cain were still gathering the fruit of the ground as "they were in the field", which they were to "till". Yet, even after Cain killed Abel, God clearly foretold ("When") that Cain was still to "tillest the ground" (Gen. 4:12 KJB), though it would not "yield unto" him "her strength", since he was a murderer, and to be a "vagabond".

Yet, since Cain could reject the reason for the death of an animal, and kill a member of mankind, even his own brother, what would it be to go from that to then killing and devouring that which belonged to God, showing the absolute rejection of God's word and promise of redemption?

  10. Noah, just before the flood, was 500 (Gen. 5:32) when he has his first child (Japheth, Gen. 10:2-5), with the other two following shortly thereafter in the 501-503rd years of his life! These patriarchs lived a very long time, and some near to the "day" (1000 years; Gen. 2:17 KJB) with the LORD (Psa. 84:10, 90:4; 2 Pet. 3:8 KJB). What were the reasons for this longevity, even in the face of sin? They listened to the words of God, walking with God as Enoch (Gen. 5:23-24 KJB), and remained with the diet God had given them from the beginning! Even just before the flood, God had instructed Noah to take "of all food that is eaten" (Gen. 6:21 KJB), for himself, his family, their families, and the creatures that were to be saved in the ark.
    • Gen 6:21 And take thou unto thee of all food that is eaten, and thou shalt gather it to thee; and it shall be for food for thee, and for them.
    • Gen 9:28 And Noah lived after the flood three hundred and fifty years.
    • Gen 9:29 And all the days of Noah were nine hundred and fifty years: and he died.
    Noah's lifespan was 950 years.

God's Health Law for mankind continued in Genesis 6-9 (a temporary measure in a crisis)
  • Gen 6:5 And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
  • Gen 6:6 And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart.
  • Gen 6:7 And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them.
  • Gen 6:11 The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence.
  • Gen 6:12 And God looked upon the earth, and, behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth.
  • Gen 6:13 And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth.
  • Gen 7:2 Of every clean beast thou shalt take to thee by sevens, the male and his female: and of beasts that are not clean by two, the male and his female.
  • Gen 7:3 Of fowls also of the air by sevens, the male and the female; to keep seed alive upon the face of all the earth.
Mankind was already committing "violence" through "wickedness" and "evil" in the earth. Mankind was corrupting everything, including the beasts of the earth, and using them and breeding them in ways God never intended. Even from the beginnig of Genesis, and the first sacrifice of a "lamb" (Gen. 3:21; Rev. 13:8 KJB) there was a division of the "clean" (Gen. 7:2a KJB) and the "not clean" (Gen. 7:2b KJB) by God. Because sin increased in mankind, the suffering of beasts also increased, even as it would later (Hosea 4:1-7 KJB).

God desired to preserve a remnant of both mankind and beast:
  • Gen 6:18 But with thee will I establish my covenant; and thou shalt come into the ark, thou, and thy sons, and thy wife, and thy sons' wives with thee.
  • Gen 6:19 And of every living thing of all flesh, two of every sort shalt thou bring into the ark, to keep them alive with thee; they shall be male and female.
  • Gen 6:20 Of fowls after their kind, and of cattle after their kind, of every creeping thing of the earth after his kind, two of every sort shall come unto thee, to keep them alive.
  • Gen 6:21 And take thou unto thee of all food that is eaten, and thou shalt gather it to thee; and it shall be for food for thee, and for them.
The "food that is eaten" (Gen. 6:21 KJB) was not the beasts, since God was looking to preserve all that went into the ark, "alive" (Gen. 6:19-20 KJB).

God, as promised, brought them all through the flood:
  • Gen 8:15 And God spake unto Noah, saying,
  • Gen 8:16 Go forth of the ark, thou, and thy wife, and thy sons, and thy sons' wives with thee.
  • Gen 8:17 Bring forth with thee every living thing that is with thee, of all flesh, both of fowl, and of cattle, and of every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth; that they may breed abundantly in the earth, and be fruitful, and multiply upon the earth.
  • Gen 8:18 And Noah went forth, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons' wives with him:
  • Gen 8:19 Every beast, every creeping thing, and every fowl, and whatsoever creepeth upon the earth, after their kinds, went forth out of the ark.
The goal of God was that mankind and beasts "multiply", "breed abundantly" and "be fruitful upon the earth" (Gen. 8:17 KJB). In thanks to God, and belief of God's promise (Gen. 3:15,21; Rev. 13:8 KJB) in the Redeemer, and the promise to never flood the earth with water again (Gen. 9:8-17 KJB) Noah offered sacrifice by faith in them, in God.
  • Gen 8:20 And Noah builded an altar unto the LORD; and took of every clean beast, and of every clean fowl, and offered burnt offerings on the altar.
  • Gen 8:21 And the LORD smelled a sweet savour; and the LORD said in his heart, I will not again curse the ground any more for man's sake; for the imagination of man's heart is evil from his youth; neither will I again smite any more every thing living, as I have done.
  • Gen 8:22 While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.
The only acceptable sacrifice, whas that which God required, "clean", never the "not clean".

Once Noah and his family, and all the beasts that were with them, were delivered through the judgment of God upon sin, God gave commandment to mankind to be "fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth" (Gen. 9:1 KJB). Then, as God had given dominion to Adam over all things, a dominion was given to Noah in a similar way:
  • Gen 9:1 And God blessed Noah and his sons, and said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth.
  • Gen 9:2 And the fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon every beast of the earth, and upon every fowl of the air, upon all that moveth upon the earth, and upon all the fishes of the sea; into your hand are they delivered.
  • Gen 9:3 Every moving thing that liveth shall be meat for you; even as the green herb have I given you all things.
  • Gen 9:4 But flesh with the life thereof, which is the blood thereof, shall ye not eat.
  • Gen 9:5 And surely your blood of your lives will I require; at the hand of every beast will I require it, and at the hand of man; at the hand of every man's brother will I require the life of man.
  • Gen 9:6 Whoso sheddeth man's blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made he man.
  • Gen 9:7 And you, be ye fruitful, and multiply; bring forth abundantly in the earth, and multiply therein.
Because of the emergency situation, with the world completely devastated by the judgment of the flood upon sin, and the fruit trees of the world needing to re-grow (Gen. 8:11 KJB), God allowed a temporary diet of the "clean" creatures (Gen. 9:2-3 KJB), and that to specifically shorten the long-lifespans of sinful mankind (Gen. 9:5 KJB).
