I've heard the opinion before that children should not be messing with guns due to how society has turned.

It is all in how they are taught, in this area many kids go hunting with their fsather at a young age and they are taught safety and a healthy respect for guns

Same here. Most households here maintain AT LEAST one gun, and yet we had an inccdent yesterday with a gunman that was causing trouble and shot three people, but that was the first time in YEARS this county has had anything like that. It is VERY rare and yet in places in the cities it is like every week or every day.

Letting kids mess with guns, no. Teaching kids that guns are a dangerous tool, not unlike a chainsaw, yes.

I picked chainsaw because while I've never owned a gun I used a chainsaw a lot as a teen.

I've also seen kids taught gun handling at camp, done well, overall I'd say the kids at camp were safer with guns than adults.

We should realize that without the second amendment rights our constitu5tion would be more meaningless than it already is. It has slowly been eroded and reinterpreted already

Remember, while I support the constitution it was meant to be a living document.

I think the problem in the opening post is the term "mess with guns".

If children are taught from an early age that guns aren't toys, that the trigger has no Undo button, and that anything to do with guns must be respected then I don't see why they shouldn't receive age-appropriate introduction to them.

I think the worst thing that can happen is for kids to see guns in comical violence situations (think of shows like The A-Team where half a dozen machine guns can be rattling away without hitting anything) and then figure that guns are toys that you can use to blow up racks of plates and glasses but don't do any damage to people, go out and play with them, and end up in the news for all the wrong reasons.

That is one huge advantage with hunting, the kid soon realizes in his gut that guns kill and the animals don't get resurrected.
