Yes, what you say about detachment from self-wants being key to following Christ appears to be true yet those most engaged in such activities live lives of poverty, chastity, and obedience so the philosopher may be right when he says that pursuing spiritual things and avoiding frippery leads to societal poverty. He seems to want a middle way. I imagine his middle way would not be Christianity.
Generally, the middle way refers to Buddhism. However; you would be hard pressed to find a Buddhist who denies the Christ or Jesus. You would be equally hard pressed to find one who understands GOD the way most Christians do.
There are sects and divisions among all people. Some of these are wrong and far from the narrow path however.
Moderation isn't extremism is all.
Buddhists don't generally deny GOD or the Spirit of GOD, or the fact that it can and does indwell particular Holy(different) people.
To be honest; I haven't studied Buddhism much comparatively.

Sorry if I got off topic.
I don't deny what you said about worldly poverty; it comes with not wanting it to some extent.
Life recieves sustenance, and ultimately, not from the hands of man, but the breath and Light/ Fire of GOD.
Fire in this sense is referring to the Spirit, and not punishment, or hell, or evil, or void.
