The US is celebrating Memorial Day on Monday. :usa1::usa1::usa1::usa1::usa1::usa1:

A lot of people go to the beach for the weekend. Some go to cemeteries. Others have ceremonies at flag sites.

What are you doing?

We both have the day off. As far as I know, no plans yet.

I had a great uncle (maybe great-great?) who died in World War 2. He was an officer on a submarine and officially is "missing in action" because (as is often the case with submarines) the ship and crew just disappeared and no remains have been found. This relative, however, was "on the other side." It's only slightly motivated by this relative, but for several years I've been very interested in WW2 and in the stories of soldiers. I just finished yet another book about this, "Unlikely Warrior: A Jewish Soldier in Hitler's Army" a book I'd highly recommend as it is the autobiography of an enlisted man in the German Army serving on the Eastern Front.

Memorial Day is a day to REMEMBER those who died in war for us..... and be grateful for them. IMO, it's also a day to pray that they will be the last who NEED to so die.

QUESTION: Do other countries have an equal to this American national holiday? A holiday to remember the fallen in war? The USA also has a separate national holiday to remember and appreciate veterens, those who have served in the military during war.

To answer Josiah's question in post 3 of this thread - in Australia there is ANZAC day.

I don't celebrate it in any way, nor memorial day in the US when I lived there. War is very rarely ever just, and the reasons for it are very rarely ever true.

Canada has Remembrance Day, but it's not a holiday for going to the beach or celebrating. It's a sombre occasion. The way that many in the US observe Memorial Day has always baffled me.
