A 32GB drive isn't going to go very far these days. For the price of a 32GB SSD you should be able to get a much bigger conventional hard drive. Moving parts, slower and all that, but significantly cheaper and far more storage. I'm sure you can tack a USB hard drive onto the thing but that does get to be a hassle. The 1TB of OneDrive storage is great but it looks like after the first year that becomes an ongoing cost, and once you've got a load of files on it you'll be tied to it. And you can't get at your files if you're on the move and away from wifi.

thx for replies CHers. iam thinking, because i download a lot of stuff, wallpapers, programs..maybe a 500GB external hard drive will help to lessen the load on the new pc..or even a 32GB flash drive woud work.

Depending on just what you download 32GB may be all but useless.

My perception of space is a bit distorted because my photography folder currently runs to slightly north of 500GB, so for me anything with less than 500GB is useless (I keep backups on external 1TB drives, and my desktop has 2.5TB so I also use that for long term storage).

You can get a 2TB external USB3 drive for less than $100 these days, or 1TB runs to somewhere around half that (I think $60 or so last I looked). If you didn't commit to your laptop yet, maybe look at one with a reasonable internal hard drive instead of spending the money on the SSD. The SSD will make it faster but if your budget is limited you might be better going for more storage and accepting it won't boot in a second.

ETA: If you're the kind of guy who only has 500MB of pictures, not much music and doesn't do video at all then 32GB may be enough for you. A few times I've given away hard drives that are too small to be any use to me and I've been surprised at how eagerly people have taken them. The last one was a 200GB drive I gave my dad. I don't think he'll fill that thing between now and the day he dies, but it doesn't even come close to meeting my needs.

Yes, I think an external drive would help.

You could copy the wallpaper to a 'cloud drive' like drop box or google drive. Then the pretty blue laptop could access them without needing to take up precious space.

The cloud option is fine until you need them while you're away from home and don't have wifi access.

It's also great until the supplier suddenly decides that "Free storage" now costs $99.99/year and in two days you lose access to your folders unless you pay.

I can't recall ever being desperate to change wallpaper on my netbook while outside and without wi-fi ;)

If all you've got on the cloud is wallpapers that's fine. If you're trying to say to someone "hey, I've got this great picture, let me show you" and then find you can't show them because it's on the cloud and you don't have wifi access it may be more of a problem. If you're trying to show a picture to a potential client then it really is a problem.

Like I said my perspective is somewhat skewed by my own requirements, and even though my requirements are at least fairly unusual it's good to make sure people are aware of strengths and weaknesses of proposed solutions before they commit to them.

If your laptop has a socket for an SDXC card you can get a 128GB SDXC for something like $60. I recently picked up a twin pack of them for (I think) $120.

I think most of the time people get hacked because they use stupid passwords. If you're using your birthday, or "password", "fred", "qwerty" or some such you deserve to be hacked.

Personally I like having the control that a physical hard drive gives me. It means I don't have quite the same level of access as I would with a pure cloud service but typically anything I do leave on a cloud-type service is sufficiently heavily encrypted and password protected that I can't read it on my phone or tablet anyway.

"fred" ??? Really? People use that? LOL

My passwords follow a formula that contain a cap, numbers and punctuation when allowed. At work we aren't supposed to use the same password for things (some of us have anywhere from 5-8 passwords to remember) and they tell us to NOT write them down. HOW is one supposed to remember all those?

Cloud service....not sure I'd be up for that for my personal machine.
