Actually I have seen the papers. Doesnt change the wording or the thoughts that were introduced and speak of a firm belief in God and the blessings thereof.

Only you seem to be suggesting that the Christian God is what we need and yet many of them just believed in a God. For the record, Deists do not believe God has much to DO with humans once He created us. Yet, now there is this supposed decline.

God carries a lot bigger role than most give Him credit for.

I remember reading in Mary Baker Eddy's book "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" that praying out loud was a kind of pride. Odd how people, such as Ms Eddy, can read the bible and never notice that the saints of God prayed out loud and received no rebuke for pride.

Well, much of that comes from the MOTIVE of praying. If you are praying to BE seen and heard that that is bad.

Even a silent prayer (a mental prayer without any outward sign that one is praying) can be said with a corrupt motive and that would be no better than a corrupt motive with a spoken prayer. In the things we pray we show something of ourselves to those who hear and if we choose silent prayer we show something too. I am not sure that Ms Eddy's claim had any substance to it, and the religion she was instrumental in founding (Christian Science) has not served well the Church that Christ founded, has it?

When you are out, with say your family, do you pray in public out loud? Or do you maybe bow your heads and silently give thanks for the food you are about to eat? Does it bother you if others do those things?

For me, I might pray privately and I doubt anyone would notice. I have prayed with one of my best friends in public at a restaurant but we don't make a spectacle of ourselves. At least not at that moment! :rotfl:

I don't necessarily go through the specific motions of stopping to say grace before every meal. As a rule my wife and I give thanks for our main meal of the day. If we're eating out with others we'll say grace with them if they feel so inclined but otherwise don't feel the need. We can be thankful without making a big deal of bowing our heads and praying loudly enough for others to hear us. The loud prominent prayer of thanks in a restaurant often seems like little more than posturing to me.

I'm not ashamed to pray in public, I just don't see the need to make an issue out of it where it's not necessary.

All the time. My husband says grace (quietly, we're not looking for attention) whenever we're eating out.

We had a waitress smile at us and she was nice enough to give us time to finish before approaching our table. I think that's the closest I've ever had of anyone coming over to us but no one has asked.

Do you see a lot of people praying in public? I rarely do.

I don't, but I think that's the way it should be. We're not supposed to make spectacles of ourselves or seek attention. I imagine more people pray in public than we realize because of this.

We bow our heads and say a prayer like we would at home, not loud just reverent.

I find that at least mouthing the prayer is somehow more significant Thad just thinking it. I have trouble praying audibly in the presence of others. I try to do it in privacy as stated in the Old Testament. However there are benefits to praying as a group.

Yes! It's delightful!!! What i find is that there are soooooo many who are hungry for God and may not even realize it, and then they notice you and yer party praying (not loud, just conversationally...not to attract attention, but just in a very natural way) they come over and ask, praise God!

I don't believe there are ANY "accidental" meetings of anyone.....i believe it's arranged by God Himself. We are "witnesses" regardless of where we are, or what we're doing. God is WITH us. He's never back there on a "shelf" somewhere. He's HERE, right in the HERE and NOW.

It is HE Who moooooves when someone sees us giving him thanks at a restaurant, etc.

He is GOOD. He is to be praised and given thanks.
This is so true! This is how I was first interested in finding out more about Jesus. I was a guinea pig in a pharmaceutical research study, earning money for college...we were there for several nights and one of the other girls was always reading her Bible. Somehow we started talking and she was just so humble and knowledgeable and very receptive to my questions. This was such a long time ago, and since I have fallen out of learning....until now.....and I will never forget her. She presented me with my first Bible as a new Christian.

Look on me and answer, O Lord my God. Give light to my eyes, or I will sleep in death-- Psalm 13:3

In my parish church we pray out loud together many times in the liturgy and I think that helps people to overcome any fears they may have about praying out loud when others are present. We also think well of prayers that are read so folk need not feel embarrassed by reading a prayer instead of making one up on the spur of the moment. Of course spontaneous prayers are welcomed too, so everybody can participate in community prayers if they want to.
