This just came up in a conversation with my husband yesterday. We all have those minor irritations that get under our skin. We know in our heads that it's inconsequential, but knowing it and feeling it are two different things. The one that we talked about yesterday was when people even jokingly pretend to chide you for something you have no control over. I've seen adults tease children who aren't growing very fast. Tell them they'd better get busy and start growing. That kind of thing.

The one we were discussing was an experience I had when I was hospitalized for depression. It's a good idea to participate in the social activities when they're scheduled, because if you don't, it works against you when they evaluate your progress. So I went along with playing Bingo, even though I hate Bingo. Why do I hate it? Because it's nothing but chance. There is no skill involved except the ability to read five letters and the numbers 1 through 75. If I'm going to win a game, I want it to be because I played well, not because luck was on my side. And if I'm going to lose a game, I want it to be something I can work on and get better at, not because luck simply *wasn't* on my side.

So there we were, playing Bingo for token prizes, maybe valued at a dollar or less. Randomness being what it is, some people are winning over and over, while others (including me, naturally) aren't winning at all. The ones who are winning repeatedly are strutting their stuff, acting like top dog, as if they're winning because they actually are superior players. As for me, when I'm in a state of depression and something like this happens, I start thinking even God is against me. My logic is that He can control chance, and I cannot, so there must be some reason He doesn't want me to win, which means He is punishing me for something, or He must not like me as much as He likes the others. I know I'm not thinking straight there, but that's depressive illness for you. It didn't help when staff started making up these pity rules, such as, "After you've won the fourth time, you have to give your prize to somebody who hasn't won yet." Um, no thanks. I don't want a prize if I didn't win it myself. It's not about whether or not I have a Snickers bar or tealight candle or a bandanna. If I really want one of those things, I can buy it. The important thing is, I'm not going to walk out of there feeling good about myself because somebody felt sorry for me and gave it to me.

But then the nurses started trying to "rally up" those who weren't winning, by inciting a sense of competition. "Come on, ladies. The guys are winning too many games! We're going to have to catch up!" As if--and this is what I keep stressing--anybody has any control over what numbers get called! Ugh, if I never play another Bingo game in my life, it will be all right with me.

So, what trifling little things really bug you?

Adults who haven't mastered the skill of eating with their mouths closed drives me straight up the wall. If I go out to eat with someone, and they're making all kinds of smacking noises and I can see the food rolling around in their mouth as it's being chewed, I want out of there immediately...and you can bet I will never sit down to eat with them again. I know it's petty of me, but I am what I am.

I really haven't been driving very long myself, but I don't understand why people think it's a race out there. Some of them are so afraid you're going to be in FRONT of them at the red light, and they have to make sure you're BEHIND them.

Yeah what I really hate about that is that that little bit of extra speed isnt going to get you there more than a few seconds less than the person you just passed unless you are driving long distance

while driving, a moterist in front of you starts to speed up and deliberately slows down as you come up behind them..and repeats the process over again. it happened today. "brake, go..brake, go" i couldnt do anything about it as i was in heavy traffic in commuter tunnel. perhaps for the person doing it, it was a game. but driving is a serious business. the driver apparently looked to be in his teens

I don't like it when people spell out "dis" for "this," "dat" for "that," "da" for "the," and "doe" for "though." It's OK when they talk like that naturally, because it's their regional accent, but spelling it like that just looks ignorant. I'm Southern, and I think the same thing if someone were to spell out a Southern accent phonetically.

I've got one. People who weave back and forth from lane to lane, or change across multiple lanes. Plan your route beforehand, and know what lane you need to be in before you make that turn that's coming up.

Similarly, singers who are all up and down the scale while singing only one or two syllables. I picture the musical staff like a multi-lane highway, and I think the same way. Pick a lane, and stay in it.

Amen, sister! I call that playing "find the note." Now obviously some vibrato is good, but some singers take that notion and blow it out of proportion by several orders of magnitude, resulting in the mess we hear from so many so-called singers.

That annoys me too, particularly when I'm cycling.

I've had people squeeze past me far too close (sometimes dangerously close) so they can get to the back of the line for the red light a couple of seconds faster. One guy passed so close he almost forced me off the road only to stop barely 50 yards ahead because the traffic light was red. He didn't look very happy when I immediately passed him right back (the road in question had a designated cycle lane approaching the traffic lights).

People who can't maintain a steady speed when driving on an empty road, or who drift all over the road. Usually it turns out to be someone on their cellphone who obviously can't cope with talking and driving at the same time.

It's also very frustrating following someone who constantly touches their brakes for no readily apparent reason. Slight bend in the road - touch the brakes. Slight uphill - touch the brakes. Slight downhill - touch the brakes. Car coming the other way - touch the brakes. It's really tedious because the time they really do put their brake pedal through the floor because of a genuine emergency you're so conditioned that they're just touching their brakes again you lose vital braking distance.

Bad eating habits... eating with mouth open, smacking, etc., etc., etc.

Bad smells.... just no excuse for STINKING.

How about people who make major grammar or spelling errors while haughtily criticizing somebody else's grammar or spelling? One of the most common examples is talking about how others are ignorant and don't know how to use good "grammer."
