So I was release from the hospital today. Was there for a day or 2. And guess what I found out? I'm a type 2 diabetic. Just one more thing to add to life? Lots of things are going to be changed around here.

Please pray for me as this is going to be really hard for me. Jordan has already said he will be doing it with me. He is my support right now.

My dad is a type 2 diabetic - and has been for a long time. Contrary to what people assume, he has always been active and very slender (if anything, he's underweight) and (like me) not a great lover of sweets. It's just that ALL the males on his side of the family (and therefore, half of mine) were/are diabetics - it's just STRONG in his DNA.

He keeps it under control with diet, exercise and medication (no insulin) - but diabetes is progressive, it just gets worse with time and thus harder to manage with time. The important thing is to severely limit cards - in any form (not just sugar). So he eats a big salad and skips the potato or rice. And he never did ate dessert so that's nothing new. That's pretty much it - it just doubles up on the greens and skips the rice and potatoes. If he orders a burger, he substitutes a salad or the fries; the bun is a lot of carbs but if breakfast and dinner have few carbs, that's okay (otherwise, that burger is ordered as a lettuce wrap). It's not been difficult for him - but then it hasn't included loosing a lot of weight and major dietary changes for him as I think is typically the case.

Anyway, he's been a diabetic for probably 20 years now and still no consequence or medical effects AT ALL and no insulin. It CAN be managed well. Can't be cured (and it gets worse with time) but it can be controlled so that it has no medical c

DON'T PANIC but don't brush it off, either. Get a handle on it, adopt a new lifestyle - and you can fully live with this, keeping it from having any medical consequences. The people who have lots of consequences are the people who believe that ignoring it cures it.

I went to the my doctors and they weighted me and I was shocked and the number. As I don't feel like I am that big. :(
They said I need to "count calories" She also said I will have high cholesterol so they have put me on a med for that as well as the diabetes med.

Try a vegan diet for a while, it may reduce your blood pressure, cholesterol, and perhaps help with weight loss.

I have been type 2 diabetic for 15 years. It is a hard problem to deal with but you can do it. Learn as much as you can. It is a struggle especially around Halloween and holidays

From what I remember of what my doctor said your HDL figures can be improved through regular exercise. If I recall (and don't take my word for this sort of thing, talk to your doctor) diet may reduce your LDL while exercise can increase your HDL (HDL is the so-called "good cholesterol" - if your LDL figures are a little high but your HDL is also a little high you may be considered to be in good condition overall)

Look for a few circular loops you can walk from your home or work and walk them regularly. If you've got a few routes you can mix them up a little. I've got a route I like to walk that's a little under six miles - the first three miles gain about 1300 feet in elevation, the next three miles lose it again. Another route is about the same length but with rolling hills so it's not as intense as a relentless uphill walk for miles. Then there's one that starts and finishes at home so I don't need the car at all - that's about three miles and not hugely hilly.

On the calories issue, if you drink regular soda in any volume that's a pretty easy win. It's remarkable how many dead calories you can take on board just by drinking that stuff, especially in diners where they keep refilling your glass. If you're regularly going through 3-4 pints of soda (easily done with a meal if you take your time) the numbers get pretty scary. If you figure very roughly 150 calories in 12oz of soda (it varies depending on just what soda you drink) and you have three refills you're potentially looking at 600 calories worth of soda alone, before you even consider your meal. I'm assuming the soda is served in a pint glass with ice, hence 12oz of actual soda in a 16oz glass. I used to find that in the course of a three week vacation to the US I could easily gain 10 pounds, but when I switched from drinking soda with meals out to drinking unsweetened iced tea I could stay for 3-4 weeks and not gain any weight at all.

From what you've said it would probably be a good idea to talk to your doctor before you make major lifestyle changes - you don't want to overdo it and end up worse off.

That is so hard tho. I might be able to do a vegetarian one.

You will get use to it fast. I am so use to giving myself shots now sometimes I forget if I already did it or not.
