Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with ...
to be yoked together unequally is the picture of two oxen from differing farms ..one wants to go this way one wants to go the other and so the plow they pull goes nowhere
y
to be yoked together unequally is the picture of a large ox being set under the same yoke a donkey .. your going to have that plow go round in circles as the strength of the ox will pull that plow to its side .
to be yoked together unequally is to serve two masters ..there will be conflict because you cant serve two master
to be yoked together unequally is to have differing desires visions and goals ..if the yoke is not the yoke of the lord jesus, it is the controlling yoke of this world
the yoke of the lord is easy gentle and guides
the yoke of the world is heavy ,oppressive and enslaving.
to be yoked together unequally in marriage is always going to be fraught with conflict . so if your not married .. dont marry an unbeliever and place yourself under a whole lot of stress you dont need .
if your married already when you became a beleiver ..,, stay as your are in so much as you are able to serve the lord and be faithful to him in that capacity, dont seek divorce, God hates divorce .
the picture of being Unequally yoked is simply that we cannot keep on a straight course if we are coupled to ,contracted to ,married to ,mortgaged to ,or any other form of yoked, to something that is of this world ,,it will always be drawn to this world while we are always being drawn to the kingdom of God . why make a head ache for yourself and them .
we see the effects on mass scale also .. televangelists contracted to tv stations cant openly speak againt sin(in particular case being ,homesexuality )
its simple as that
My OP was asking if other religions had the same type of verse that they use.
to answer that question i felt in necessary to clarify what being unequally yoked means .because in your op you used the term
unyoked .. but we should be
unyoked from that which is not of god .
we should not be
yoked together unequally ,with the things or ways of this world .
and the above simplistic explanation of what being unequal yoked means .
if we are pledged (contracted ) to a wordy person thus giving them an element of control over us ,, the proverbs tell us to go swiftly and do what you must to free yourself .
so from that understanding we can look for similar teaching in other religions .. but i think we find they are not so gently on the matter as saying dont be unequally yoked .. Some are more in the vein of .. kill them ,annihilate those opposed to you . thats a little more harsh then snobbing .
but snobbing is certainly not the intention of the instruction . it merely means to not put yourself in a position where worldly authority can dictate over your freedom to obey the lord Jesus .
for instance ..i work for a company ,, while im employed by that compasny the companies contractual control over me forbids me to testify of my faith .
-then the lord speaks to me and says .. testy of me to this person ..
whom am i to obey ? jesu of course
BUT the dilemma only arises because of the unequal yoke im under . so while it happens .. we are best to avoid being unequally yoked where we can do so .
its nothing to do with snobbing other people .
the closed brethren take it to that extreme and refuse to eat lunch at the same table with unsaved folks ..odd since Jesus dined with sinners ,i dont see their reasoning .they have confused the breaking of bread in remembrance/ with and open all invited lunch .
