When you're sad or ill do you wonder if God loves you?

Being ill can be a very miserable experience and it seems so unnecessary so why do Christians get ill? Surely being in Christ and being his body ought to confer some sort of immunity, right?

God can use those times of suffering to teach us lessons and sometimes we don't even know what those are right away. John 3:16 is the go to verse when we doubt his love even in our afflictions.

Yes those are words of faith yet many people suffer greatly and die. From an earthly perspective that is apparently an unmitigated sadness.

How? When a woman or a man dies of a painful cancer how is that suffering and pain made good?

many times through the family in some way, I have been to funerals where people are led to Christ, that is positive and someotimes it is only with death that some people can be reached as they contemplate their own mortality

That seems more like an explanation of how death may help some to embrace faith but it does not explain the prolonged pain and suffering of the dying. And what of the seriously mentally ill who suffer a great deal, how is their suffering turned to good?

I think it may be redemptive suffering. Participating in the suffering of Christ for the salvation of the world. Saint Paul mentioned it in regard to his beatings and other injuries from engaging in the priestly ministry of the gospel. "provided that you continue in the faith, stable and steadfast, not shifting from the hope of the gospel which you heard, which has been preached to every creature under heaven, and of which I, Paul, became a minister. Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I complete what is lacking in Christ's afflictions for the sake of his body, that is, the church, of which I became a minister according to the divine office which was given to me for you, to make the word of God fully known, the mystery hidden for ages and generations but now made manifest to his saints." (Colossians 1:23-26)

if ill , lay hands on and pray and recovery comes just as the word of God states .
