Around here we have no extra space with the hills and no shoulders. Yikes. Scary stuff.

Hills and narrow roads aren't always a good combination. I worked out a route to avoid a road I used to cycle because it had a 50mph limit, it was up a fairly steep hill and was narrow and winding. So basically I was a rolling roadblock until I got to the top and, since it had a 50mph limit, I was really holding up the traffic as I struggled to go over 10mph. Usually as soon as I got to the top I got off the road to let people get past me, took a few minutes to recover my breath, then enjoyed the descent down the other side.

Well, I never would have imagined I'd be saving orange and lemon peels and dehydrating them for a Vitamin C supplement powder or crushing up egg shells for Calcium...thanks "Natural Cures not medicine" feed for the interesting ideas.

Do the peels have a lot of Vitamin C?

Do the peels have a lot of Vitamin C?

Orange juice, raw, 100g = 50mg of Vitamin C

http://nutritiondata.self.com/facts/fruits-and-fruit-juices/1971/2

Orange Peel raw, 100g = 136mg of Vitamin C

http://nutritiondata.self.com/facts/fruits-and-fruit-juices/1976/2

I imagine there might be just slightly less when dehydrated, but probably not enough to make a marked difference.

Edit: Marked increase in minerals too with peel - especially Calcium. A whopping 161mg for peel as opposed to 11mg for same amount of juice.

Well, I tried it today. 10grams of powdered lemon peel in my morning tomato juice drink. It was...different. Tasted like citrus tomato juice. Didn't like it all that much. I think next time I'll just add it to sweet juice drinks instead. On a similar note, I do think dried Kale (which has a similar Vitamin C content per gram to orange peel - very high) might be nice with tomato juice. Will have to give that one a try.

Yes, I have never tried riding on the roads

Wow, I can't imagine riding a bike without riding on the roads. But in fairness for the longest time I was afraid of traffic on the roads, so stuck to quiet roads and trails as far as possible.

But once you get into longer distances you can only avoid them so far. It can be interesting planning long routes that don't take in major roads, partly for safety and partly because riding on busy main roads just isn't a whole lot of fun.

I think the hairiest intersection I negotiated by bike (multiple times, as it happens) was this one: https://goo.gl/maps/TbrtbwLL4kC2

I can't recall thinking of you as an Englishman :)

It explains the nature of our communications, similar cultures (though far from the same) ... I find it easier to chat with Canadians too probably because of similar cultural commonalities.

It's not quite warm yet outside so I'll wait for my walk until later this evening. Can't wait though. If I walk around the block maybe I'll post pics of the neighboring cows!
