There's no reason to draw your conclusion. "I have many mansions" combined with "I go to prepare a place for you" doesn't mean "you get a mansion".

For good measure the version you word here talks of "dwelling places" rather than "mansions". Truth be told if heaven is all it's cracked up to be I think most of us would be happy with a cabin there.

In heaven our dwelling places will be GRAND. God only does things with excellence. You can have your cabin, but for me, whatever I receive will be more than I can ever hope or think.

Yes, my point was that even a cabin in Heaven is greater than the finest mansion on Earth. There will be dwelling places in heaven and they will be grander than we can contemplate.

1 Corinthians 2:9
But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.

The thing is we don't know just what it will look like. Jesus said he would prepare a place for us, he never left the architect's drawings of what it would look like. Whatever it turns out to be in sure I'm going to love it, whether it looks like a palace or a cabin.

That's for sure!

... and given the kind of things I really like, I'd be happier with a cabin nestled in the woods on top of a mountain so I could watch the sunrise and sunset, than with a mansion in a big city. But each to their own I suppose, I would imagine God will give each of us something that will make us happy.

Are people really doing their best to work hard for God just to get something back in return?

No we do it because the love of God is within us but we do get rewards so lets not dismiss them

If a person is striving to please God or to gain some reward with works, they have missed the boat, and will get nothing but fatigue.

If we do everything out of love we gain. Here is a testimony I will share. Once I was working with a young lady who was in labor. I changed her bloody pad, for her water had broken. She remarked about how repulsive it was and she did not see how I could do the job with a smile. I told her that if Jesus could wash His disciples' dirty stinking feet, the least I could do was try to keep her clean and dry. We both laughed at that. It was love shared. I like to think it meant more than salary for me, for I enjoyed taking care of her.

... and right there we see love in action in ways that mean more than any number of fine words.
