When you registered, you had to choose a username, obviously. How did you choose yours?

I like to use the same name everywhere, just for consistency. When I got involved in the performance car forums, my username was "gauSSian" because I am into math and I had a Camaro SS. When I got involved with math help forums however, I decided the shoes of Karl Gauss were simply too large for me to fill, so I decided just to use my first name followed by both my middle and last initials which happen to be the abbreviation for my home state of Florida. So, I became "MarkFL."

How did you choose your username? :)

It's my name.

I've never felt any need to "hide" behind anything..... although I never disclose my last name and I LONG AGO stopped giving my facebook page or ANYTHING that could cause problems. When I was a young teen, I was STUPID enough to give out too much personal stuff - people had to connect a lot of dots over a lot of posts but they did.... I had HUGE problems that lasted for years. I'm now very careful about that (SAD that I need to be).

Stravinsk

Short for Stravinsky, and that was what was intended when I came up with the name like.....18,19 years ago? I've used it on Message Boards for a very very long time, although I have used some other names as well.

I'm not fond of Stravinsky's music, and when I adopted the name, it was partly at the frustration I was having with some of my own compositions. I didn't understand theory very well back then and often wondered why this or that note or chord didn't "work". Many of those things I understand now, very well.

Stravinsk also has the dubious honor of being banned from no less than 2 forums, and from one of them, I'm on the super "do not allow back" list. Now that isn't because I actually WAS super bad - but some really unwise people thought they could push some others around (including me) so I wound up creating a small army of alternates to have some fun. And, to post while super smashed. And, at times, for a little payback. Nothing too serious, mind you. Some of the accusations made my way are exceedingly exaggerated or just plain untrue.

Well, you and I have been messaging for a year now since I got fired from the other site and you were one of the first to reach out to me. Yes, everyone, the guy I banned actually wrote me a nice message. He's a true gentleman and I have yet to see that legend that is gossiped about on the other site so you can't believe everything on the internet ;)

It's good to have you here, Strav.

I love this site. And the way it is moderated.

I've posted at DOZENS of sites (several of which don't even exist anymore) since I was 10 years old. Often WAY, WAY too much. I posted as a child, a teen and now an adult; as a Catholic, a seeker and now a Lutheran; as single and now as married. I've only been technically, formally banned once. It was from CatholicAnswers. I never had ANY contact from the staff there - none. No warnings, no infractions, no actions at all - not even an email or PM. But one day, when I went there, a window popped up saying I was permanently banned. And found I could read but not post. This status was added to all my posts, and thus a field day of attacks began - my posts twisted, misquoted and I found myself being blasted and unable to respond. I contacted staff to find out why I was banned and to report the flames but for over a month, there was no responds at all. FINALLY, I got a reply. The Admin said that I had been reported several times and that all the reports were arbitrated in my favor - no violation had been made. But it was eventually decided by staff that I was "not contributing to the objectives of the site" (the exact words) and thus was banned. The Admin said I could appeal the ban, but I decided that would be silly. Now, I've been essentially asked to leave from a couple of others. And at "the website that shall not be named" (that many of us formerly or also post at), it was threatened several times (in each case, I had NO warnings or infractions!). I did recieve a "forum specific ban" ("fsb") from an Advisor - who refused repeatedly to tell me why, who admitted I had NO active warnings whatsoever, and admitted that actually forum specific bans didn't exist anymore. I was also told I had to keep the action a secret or I'd be permanently banned. And that the reason would not be told to me and if I continued to ask, I would be permanently banned. And if I appealed it, I would be permanently banned. There was this carrot: it would all expire in one year. So I pretty much left for the year. But when the year was up, the ban (and all the conditions around it) were renewed permanently. I tried to return anyway - under those conditions - but upper staff (Advisors) made that absurdly miserable and difficult, attacking me at every turn, often reminded that they could permanently ban me anytime they wanted. I gave up. I'm now here.

I like it here. I don't spend NEARLY as much time posting as I once did, however.

Thank you!

Pax

Unfortunately that other site had people in upper echelons that seemedpower hungary to me and I totally disliked the fact thatyou couldnt discuss any staff action. I think thatwas for them a lotm more than for the members

Aww. This pleases me, but let it be known that Lammchen gained my favor by exercising fairness and kindness with me from the start. Not preference. Fairness, and a willingness to examine accusations for evidence rather than just accept someone's word for it.

And I am not a saint. Not that I think that place's rules either reflect worldwide Christian values or basic moral values so that I might feel a pang of conscience at saying OMG! ... but there were a few instances where I deserved to get warned or banned.

I have to admit that.

Those instances, however, do not come close to the vile exaggerations and accusations thrown my way by some others. I wrote a mini book here, but decided to cut it out, for now. Suffice it to say that if you are one of those people from the other place that hates me or fears me - then forget about me, because although I have taken some precautions for prudence sake, otherwise that is my only plan for you - to forget you.

Don't know what site you mean exactly, but one of the ones I'm banned from also had a rule against publicly discussing staff actions and they also had issues (imo) with funding. Not lack of it - but motive for it. I got a message from one Admin saying I was not to criticize some of the ads. The site is money oriented, and unfortunately this is fundamentally incompatible with it's theme of Christianity. I know some people disagree with that philosophically, and that some funding is necessary to keep up a website - but whatever one's feelings on how or how far this extends - the hand that feeds is also the hand that directs and has influence. When greed comes into the picture - often undue influence. For me - that funding and the person or persons behind it is one of it's biggest drawbacks for the namesake it wishes to represent and promote.

I'd have to reach official sainthood status by means foreign to the pope, but am not sure how this happens. I vote cuteness factor with a fine mix of bad boy indicators is a good start though.

Yup and of course overwhelming people with ads to try to influence them to give money, that always struck me as wrong

My username is derived from my email for my business. My son named it when he was younger. I'm a carpenter and his father. At the time he associated my profession to Bob the builder, but I'm his dad so popsthebuilder it was. Still my email and name on all sites I interact with.

On a side note I have been banned from multiple "Christian sites" yet strangely atheists sites that show a grand hatred for me in general have yet to ban me. Says something for the character of each unfortunately.

I'm sorry this has been your experience.

Were the problems due in part to message boards with a religious theme? Perhaps the Catholic one you were banned from?

I'm one of those people who is fairly decent at connecting dots. There is a well respected and kind chic over at one of the forums I am banned from, a regular poster with an awesome personality who I found out her real name via some clues posted all over the forum, some of her avatar habits and a facebook search. She lists her friends, and I have not seen one person from said forum on it.

The thing is, I told her when I found out and she freaked. Thought someone had told me. No one had. Even though we had had some friendly private chats she shut me out on this - and - she changed part of her proper name on Facebook.

I feel sort of bad. I've never revealed to anyone that this person "X" uses username "Y" on message board "Z", and have no reason to. She was nice and I liked her. And now on account of me finding out, she hides it. Super *sigh*.

Real friends don't freak out over the finding out of a name. Move on, there are a lot of people in the world that you can talk to. People should know there is no true anonymity on the internet. Someone, somewhere will know you somehow.
