Have you ever thought of creating your own forum? What would it be about?

If you ever had your own forum, what was it like? What happened to it, or is it still running?

Thought about it a few times, but most of what interests me doesn't interest many others so I would not expect success.

Many years ago I not only thought about it but started writing some code to implement it. My thinking was more to create some kind of photographic gallery where people could have a standalone discussion but could also discuss an individual picture, a collection of pictures etc.

If anyone knows what PhotoSIG used to be, something loosely like that but with more flexibility. I decided not to proceed with the idea because my hosting provider at the time had a very strict no nudity policy regarding what they hosted and any photographic forum open to the public will, sooner or later, have people who don't care to obey the rules and I didn't want to lose my entire hosting account because I didn't take it down fast enough.

Well, things have changed a bit and I think more hosts would be understanding as long as it's art and not porn?

This site has a low monthly cost where you can build a forum, and the higher tiers allows you to have a blog and media pages. I'm on the team to help promote it and have a fun little starter forum called Drama Llama. If you're interested, I believe the owner has a discount on start up? I can't remember what he said, but I can ask.

Maybe, at the time the policy made no distinction. Realistically speaking it's hard to determine where the line between the two should be drawn - it's easy to find examples that few would argue but the endless gray areas in between are the problem. And when the penalty for failing to comply with the terms potentially means all my web hosting and email addresses go away overnight I wasn't willing to take that chance.

Honestly, I'm not sure I'm sufficiently interested to pursue it any more. It was something I considered a while back but that was in the days when it was considered reasonable to type your own HTML tags into a post to make it look pretty, picture upload limits were about half a meg and people could be expected to pay (even if only $20-30/year) for a membership.

Maybe I'll rethink, but right now I've got other priorities.
